Until now, Catasetum confusum G.A. Romero-González was known from the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Tocantins. The present study extends the distribution of this species to the states of Bahia and Piauí, as well as the Federal District, based on herbarium specimens deposited at CEN, RB, UFMT and UPCB. Following IUCN criteria, C. confusum is Endangered due to its area of occupancy, geographic distribution and habitat quality, showing the importance of these new records.

Immobilization is an exciting alternative to improve the stability of enzymatic processes. However, part of the applied covalent strategies for immobilization uses specific conditions, generally alkaline pH, where some enzymes are not stable. Here, a new generation of heterofunctional supports with application at neutral pH conditions was proposed. New supports were developed with different bifunctional groups (i.e., hydrophobic or carboxylic/metal) capable of adsorbing biocatalysts at different regions (hydrophobic or histidine richest place), together with a glutaraldehyde group that promotes an irreversible immobilization at neutral conditions. To verify these supports, a multi-protein model system (E. coli extract) and four enzymes (Candida rugosa lipase, metagenomic lipase, β-galactosidase and β-glucosidase) were used. The immobilization mechanism was tested and indicated that moderate ionic strength should be applied to avoid possible unspecific adsorption. The use of different supports allowed the immobilization of most of the proteins contained in a crude protein extract. In addition, different supports yielded catalysts of the tested enzymes with different catalytic properties. At neutral pH, the new supports were able to adsorb and covalently immobilize the four enzymes tested with different recovered activity values. Notably, the use of these supports proved to be an efficient alternative tool for enzyme immobilization at neutral pH.

A new species of Hyperaspidini, Tenuisvalvae quadripunctata sp. nov. is described and illustrated. The genus is now represented by 11 species, all native of South America, and the new taxon is integrated into the existing key to species of the genus. Ecological data for T. quadripunctata sp. nov. and a list with prey and host plants to the species of the genus Tenuisvalvae are provided.

Nowadays defying homology relationships among sequences is essential for biological research. Within homology the analysis of orthologs sequences is of great importance for computational biology, annotation of genomes and for phylogenetic inference. Since 2007, with the increase in the number of new sequences being deposited in large biological databases, researchers have begun to analyse computerized methodologies and tools aimed at selecting the most promising ones in the prediction of orthologous groups. Literature in this field of research describes the problems that the majority of available tools show, such as those encountered in accuracy, time required for analysis (especially in light of the increasing volume of data being submitted, which require faster techniques) and the automatization of the process without requiring manual intervention. Conducting our search through BMC, Google Scholar, NCBI PubMed, and Expasy, we examined more than 600 articles pursuing the most recent techniques and tools developed to solve most the problems still existing in orthology detection. We listed the main computational tools created and developed between 2011 and 2017, taking into consideration the differences in the type of orthology analysis, outlining the main features of each tool and pointing to the problems that each one tries to address. We also observed that several tools still use as their main algorithm the BLAST “all-against-all” methodology, which entails some limitati...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of Amazon prawn, Macrobrachium amazonicum, fed practical diets containing increasing levels of crude protein. Experimental design followed a complete randomized distribution, with five treatments and six replicates. The treatments are equivalent to crude protein levels, dry matter basis, in the diet: 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 g kg-1. Experimental units were into a recirculation system with mechanical and biological filters to keep the water quality within the suitable range for prawn culture. At the end of the trial, mean prawn survival ranged from 84.8 to 91.3 % without significant differences among treatments (p > 0.05). Results show a quadratic growth for final weight, weight gain, final length and length growth, with the increase of crude protein levels in the diet. Prawn fed diets with 370 and 348 g kg-1 achieved significant higher weight gain and length growth, respectively (p < 0.05). The body composition of Amazon prawns was influenced by crude protein levels in the diet, having the level of 350 g kg-1 caused an increase in moisture content and reduction in crude protein deposition (p < 0.05), when compared to the level of 200 g kg-1. The recommended crude protein level in the diet of M. amazonicum juveniles is 370 g kg-1.
