Milk fever is an important metabolic disorder that affects dairy cows around parturition. It is associated with a breakdown in the mechanisms of calcium homeostasis, resulting in very low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia). The main objective of this study was to dissect the genetic basis underlying milk fever incidence in Holstein cattle. Data consisted of 31.6 k producer-recorded lactation incidence records from 15.3 k cows. The analysis included a whole-genome scan and a subsequent gene-set analysis in order to reveal individual genes, genetic mechanisms and biological pathways implicated in the incidence of periparturient hypocalcemia. The association analysis identified at least eight different genomic regions that explain considerable amounts of additive genetic variance for milk fever incidence. Notably, some of these regions harbor genes, such as CYP27A1, CYP2J2, GC, SNAI2, and PIM1, that are directly involved in vitamin D metabolic pathway. Moreover, the gene-set analysis revealed several functional terms, such as calcium ion binding, calcium ion transportation, T cell differentiation, B cell activation, protein phosphorylation, apoptosis, and protein kinase activity, among others, that could be implicated in the development of periparturient hypocalcemia. Overall, this comprehensive study contributes to a better understanding of the genetic control of this complex disease. In addition, these findings may contribute to the development of novel breeding strategies...

The combined application of nitrogen (N) and zinc (Zn) fertilizers is a promising agronomic strategy for the biofortification of wheat grain with Zn for human nutrition. A glasshouse experiment was carried out to assess the effects of supplying N on the uptake, translocation and accumulation of Zn in tissues of two wheat genotypes (Quartzo and BRS Parrudo) with contrasting potential for grain Zn biofortification. Winter wheat genotypes were grown to maturity in 5 cm diameter, 100 cm length tubes filled with a mixture of sand, grit and gravel (40:40:20 v/v/v) over a layer of 0.1 m3 of gravel, and supplied a full nutrient solution with low Zn (0.15 μM) or high Zn (2.25 μM) and low N (0.4 mM) or high N (4.0 mM) concentrations. High N supply increased biomass production, Zn concentration and Zn content of straw and grain in both Quartzo and BRS Parrudo. Grain Zn content more than doubled when the supplies of Zn and N were both increased from low to high in both genotypes. Quartzo had a greater grain yield than BRS Parrudo. BRS Parrudo had greater grain Zn concentration and Zn content than Quartzo. A greater N supply promoted better uptake, translocation to the shoot and accumulation of Zn within the grain. Quartzo and BRS Parrudo differed in their partitioning of biomass and Zn between tissues. It might be possible to combine the greater grain yield of Quartzo with the greater grain Zn accumulation of BRS Parrudo to deliver a greatly improved genotype for human food security.

(en)  Analyzes of samples of stem and fiber Boehmeria nivea var. Murakami were performed to increase information on the plant and disseminate its multiple possibilities of use. The histochemical analyzes with dyes and reagents showed the presence of lignified, suberous and cutinized cell walls with Safranin in the xylem region. The presence of pectin-cellulose with Astra Blue was confirmed in the regions of fiber bundles (cortex). In all regions of the stem were identified substances such as fat and mucilage with Methylene Blue evidencing high concentrations in the regions of fiber bundles and bark (violet blue). By means of Lugol (dark brown) starches were identified in several parts of the stem with concentrations in the xylem and epidermal regions. Through analyzes by EDS it was possible to identify F, Mg, Al, Si, K and Ca with predominance of K. In the chemical analyzes of the fibers were found 71.75 of cellulose, 12.11 of hemicelluloses, 1.06 of lignin and 1.70% of ashes. The percentages of extractives soluble in hot and cold water were 5.28 and 3.12% respectively, for Ethanol-Toluene was 8.55 and NaOH (1%) 27.27%. Histochemical analyzes revealed important characteristics of the fiber and stem contributing with better knowledge of the species.

(en) Obtaining information on burned areas has been studied and improved in the last decades, and the biggest question is the acquisition of consistent and detailed information about the occurrence of burnings in a simple and effective way. In view of this, remote sensing is a very interesting tool because it allows obtaining information in large areas of difficult access. The identification of areas burned by orbital data is directly related to their spectral behavior. The objective of this study was to analyze the performance of spectral indices in the identification of burned area in OLI/Landsat-8 satellite images. The indices for the before and after fire images were calculated using bands of red and near infrared: NDVI, MSAVI, SAVI, and GEMI, and bands of near infrared and short wave infrared: NBR, BAIMmod, and MIRBImod. The difference between pre and post-fire index was also calculated: dNDVI, dMSAVI, dSAVI, dGEMI, dNBR, dBAIMmod, and dMIRBImod. From these indices, six different compositions (RGB) were created and later they were segmented and classified in a non-supervised way and soon after made the extraction of the area of interest. The results of this classification were validated with the reference data obtained through the visual interpretation of the image. The methods had shown a good quality of classification, with a percentage of accuracy ranging from 85.54 to 92.46% and Kappa value of 0.70 to 0.89. The best method was the dNBR, NBRpost-fire, and dMIRBImod indices in the RGB composite.
