The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened biomes in the world. Despite that, this biome still includes many areas that are poorly known floristically, including several protected areas, such as the "Floresta Nacional do Rio Preto" ("Flona do Rio Preto"), located in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo. This study used a published vascular plant species list for this protected area from the "Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil" as the basis to synthesise the species richness, endemism, conservation and new species occurrences found in the "Flona do Rio Preto".The published list of vascular plants was based on field expeditions conducted between 2018 and 2020 and data obtained from herbarium collections available in online databases. Overall, 722 species were documented for the "Flona do Rio Preto", 711 of which are native to Brazil and 349 are endemic to the Atlantic Forest. In addition, 60 species are geographically disjunct between the Atlantic and the Amazon Forests. Most of the documented species are woody and more than 50% of these are trees. Twenty-three species are threatened (CR, EN and VU), while five are Data Deficient (DD). Thirty-two species are new records for the State of Espírito Santo. Our results expand the knowledge of the flora of the Atlantic Forest and provide support for the development of new conservation policies for this protected area.

The long search for the environmental trigger of the endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF, fogo selvagem) has not yet resulted in any tangible findings. Here, we searched for genetic associations and the differential expression of host genes involved in early viral infections and innate antiviral defense. Genetic variants could alter the structure, expression sites, or levels of the gene products, impacting their functions. By analyzing 3063 variants of 166 candidate genes in 227 EPF patients and 194 controls, we found 12 variants within 11 genes associated with differential susceptibility (p < 0.005) to EPF. The products of genes TRIM5, TPCN2, EIF4E, EIF4E3, NUP37, NUP50, NUP88, TPR, USP15, IRF8, and JAK1 are involved in different mechanisms of viral control, for example, the regulation of viral entry into the host cell or recognition of viral nucleic acids and proteins. Only two of nine variants were also associated in an independent German cohort of sporadic PF (75 patients, 150 controls), aligning with our hypothesis that antiviral host genes play a major role in EPF due to a specific virus–human interaction in the endemic region. Moreover, CCL5, P4HB, and APOBEC3G mRNA levels were increased (p < 0.001) in CD4+ T lymphocytes of EPF patients. Because there is limited or no evidence that these genes are involved in autoimmunity, their crucial role in antiviral responses and the associations that we observed support the hypothesis of a viral trigger for EPF, presumably a still unnoticed flavivirus. This work opens new frontiers in searching for the trigger of EPF, with the potential to advance translational research that aims for disease prevention and treatment.

The reuse of the culture media after biomass growth can be a cost-effective strategy for large-scale microalgae production, especially when the target product is biofuel. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of recycling the microalgae Tetradesmus obliquus culture medium, focusing on the improved production of biomass and lipids, biodiesel properties, and cost reduction. The experiments were carried out in duplicate and three sequential steps with successive recycling (50% of the clarified medium and 50% of the standard). It was found that cells from recycled cultures had a similar overall performance as those from the fresh medium (standard). From this verification, the main findings of this research pointed out that (i) the consumption of the nutrients was efficient, with values in the order of 99% nitrate, 20% phosphate, 64% total iron, and 9% potassium; (ii) the average contents of biomass and lipids in the recycled medium increased around 20% to 24%, respectively, concerning the standard; (iii) the polyunsaturated fatty acids pool present in the microalgal oil dropped from 20.71 to 9.78% in the recycled culture, which represents a high-quality feedstock for biofuel; and (iv) the biodiesel properties evaluated, including iodine and saponification values, were 48 g I2 100 g−1 and 254 mg KOH/goil−1, respectively. Finally, this recyclability bioprocess can reduce overall costs by about 34%, thus improving the economic viability of microalgae production.
