(en) We propose a compartmental SIRD model with time-dependent parameters that can be used to give epidemiological interpretations to the phenomenological parameters of the Richards growth model. We illustrate the use of the map between these two models by fitting the fatality curves of the COVID-19 epidemic data in Italy, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Cuba, and Japan, up to July 30, 2020.

Forests have been disorderly exploited, and many species are considered endangered. Some initiatives have been taken in order to prevent forests from being destroyed. A good alternative would be to plan a spatial distribution of plants, with higher number of females than males. Determining the gender of seedlings would provide important information for a possible strategy. Another common problem that researchers in this field very often face, in order to perform their experiments, is the lack of a representative database. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce a new database in this work, which is composed of nuclear magnetic resonance of adult Araucaria angustifolia plants. In order to gain better insight into this database, we have tested different strategies and classifiers. A first set of experiments took three classifiers trained to discriminate males from females considering the original database. A second round of experiments applied the genetic algorithm technique to select subsets of attributes based on single-objective and two-objective functions. After analyzing the achieved results, we have also proposed a new strategy based on statistical measures for selecting subsets from the attributes. A comprehensive set of experiments has shown that the proposed selecting strategy has achieved better performances, with an accuracy of 80.3% (AUC = 79.4). We believe that researchers will find this database a useful tool in their work on determining the Araucaria angustifolia gender. On the other hand, the proposed selecting strategy would be useful for reducing the complexity of databases and accelerating the process of building classification models.

(en) In developing countries, such as Brazil, the official mapping deficit is common. Knowing the quality of information on collaborative mapping platforms would minimize the lack of spatial data. Admitting the so-called Collective Spatial Intelligence as a parameter of collaborative data quality, this article aimed to verify the dependence between the dynamics of collaborations in the OpenStreetMap platform and the crowding of people. It has been assumed that agglomeration derives from the economic activities of a region and the place where people reside. Identifying the dependence, it was possible to stipulate quality variables for the collaborative data, when these are qualified according to Collective Spatial Intelligence.

Author summary Caterpillars of the genus Lonomia (Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) are considered the world’s most deadly lepidopterans. Due to the increasing number of cases and the lack of antivenom therapy, envenomation by these animals constitutes an emerging and somewhat neglected public health issue in Argentina and neighboring countries. Our research has determined the eco-epidemiological scenario of such an envenomation in the Argentine province of Misiones–mainly covered by the Atlantic Forest (a suitable biome for L. obliqua)–, and identified some predictors to occurrences/accidents with this insect. This study also provides the first map of the potential risk of lonomism in this province, which has several natural attractions visited by millions of tourists worldwide. We discussed our findings in light of immediate response from health authorities to outline preventive strategies for accidents and conservation of this venomous lepidopteran in its ecological niche.

Phytochemical investigation of the atemoya aerial parts was carried out by LC-MS-IT and cytotoxic activities were evaluated as well. These results led to the identification of a new N -oxide alkaloid (dehydroanomuricine- N -oxide) and eight other alkaloids: scoulerine, reticuline, isocorydine, norisocorydine, asimilobine, nornuciferine, anonaine, and liriodenine. The new alkaloid dehydroanomuricine- N -oxide and anomuricine were also isolated. The structures of these compounds were determined by spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. The cytotoxic capacity of crude methanolic extract and the alkaloidal fraction were evaluated, showing moderate cytotoxicity. The isolation and identification of these alkaloids are an important contribution to the chemotaxonomy of the genus Annona and the Annonaceae family.
