The social category of dairy cows within a herd may influence their access to essential heat abatement resources. We evaluated how dominant, intermediate, and subordinate cows used shade and water in a silvopastoral system. Thirty-nine lactating Jersey cows were observed in a replicated study. Cows had unrestricted access to natural shade and a water trough. Microclimatic conditions and cow behaviors were recorded, and social rank was determined. Sunny areas promoted potential thermal discomfort for the cows, with higher heat load (on average 580.7 W/m2) than shaded areas (on average 438.6 W/m2). Intermediate (IRR: 2.07) and subordinate (IRR: 1.63) cows were more likely (p < 0.001) to visit the water trough than dominant cows. The odds of drinking water decreased by 13% (p < 0.001) for each hour that passed throughout the day. In contrast, the odds of using shaded areas increased by 7% (p < 0.001) for each increase in hour unit. Although all cows used the shaded areas at some point, they generally spent more time standing than lying down in the shade. Social category and hour influenced (p < 0.001) the behaviors in the shaded areas, with dominant cows more likely to engage in lying behaviors such as idling and rumination. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that cows’ social category and thermal environment influenced the use of shade and drinking water. Although the overall pattern of resource use increased with rising thermal load, the proportion of use varied according to social category. Ensuring multiple or alternative resources may help meet the needs of cows across social ranks and improve thermal comfort during heat stress periods.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify how linear-type traits impact the culling risk and which traits are most associated to productive life of Holstein cows. Linear classification and test-day milk yield data of 34,653 primiparous cows obtained from the database of Associação Paranaense de Criadores de Bovinos da Raça Holandesa were used. Survival analysis was performed by PHREG procedure of SAS/STAT 9.4 using a Cox regression model. The model considered herd and year of the linear classification [...]

(en) Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman (Arecaceae) also known as queen palm, is a species of palm, widely distributed in Brazil. The queen palm is present in the food of animals and humans who consume both the fruit and the heart of palm. The species also has medicinal, ornamental and ecological importance. In vitro cultivation facilitates the germination of S. romanzoffiana, in which it is possible to obtain a high morphogenetic response. Thus, the objectives of the present work were to establish a protocol for the in vitro germination of S. romanzoffiana from the culture of zygotic embryos and to describe a methodology for the evaluation of the embryo viability with the use of tetrazolium. For this, fruits of S. romanzoffiana were collected, the embryos were excised and cultivated with dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) or gibberellic acid (GA3), in two experiments. In addition, the exposure time and concentration of tetrazolium were evaluated for embryo viability. The results showed that 39.4% of the embryos cultivated with 2,4-D and 25% cultivated with GA3 developed into seedlings. No significant difference in mass was found for seedlings developed with treatment with 2,4-D and GA3. In the tetrazolium test, 75% of the S. romanzoffiana embryos were considered viable. The in vitro germination protocol for S. romanzoffiana showed satisfactory germination results (32.2%) with only 27% contamination of the culture media.

We evaluated the inclusion of hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM) as a partial replacement for fishmeal in diets for Macrobrachium rosenbergii post-larvae (PL) over a 32-day nursery feeding trial. Five experimental diets with increasing HFM levels (control, 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5%, and 6.0%) were tested. Survival rates ranged from 73.3 ± 5.44% to 83.3 ± 3.84% without significant differences among groups. Dietary HFM inclusion levels above 3.0% significantly improved prawn performance, including final weight (up to 2.18-fold higher than control), length (1.13-fold), antenna length (1.18-fold), biomass gain (2.14-fold), and feed conversion ratio (1.59-fold lower). Prawn-fed diets at 6.0% HFM showed the highest performance among all experimental groups. No significant effects were observed on antioxidant biomarkers or digestive enzymes in prawns hepatopancreas, which suggests no imbalance in the antioxidant system or impairment of digestive function. Likewise, carcass proximate composition remained stable across experimental groups. These findings suggest that HFM at 3.0–6.0% dietary inclusion levels is a potential alternative to fishmeal in nursery-phase diets for M. rosernbergii PL, promoting prawn growth and welfare and maintaining health and carcass quality. Notably, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the potential effective use of HFM in feeding the nursery phase of M. rosernbergii.

The genotype-environment interaction (GEI) can lead to variations in gene expression related to traits, affecting the breeding value of animals. Assess the effects of GEI on milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), and protein yield (PY) at 305 days in milk in first-, second and third-parity cows, employing the reaction norms model for Holstein cattle in Paraná state. The study utilized data from the milk testing service provided by the Paraná Association of Holstein Cattle Breeders (APCBRH) in Curitiba, PR, Brazil. This encompassed records from 378,000 records across one to three lactations from 2012 to 2022, originating from 513 herds in 72 cities within the state of Paraná. The environmental gradient was established by standardizing the contemporary group solutions derived from the animal model, disregarding GEI. Reaction norms were calculated using a Random Regression Model, and genotype classification correlations were determined by Spearman’s correlation, comparing the breeding values estimated for the analyzed traits in each environmental gradient. Heritability for MY during the first lactation was moderate (0.28) in the least challenging environmental gradient, but of low magnitude (0.18) in the most challenging one. FY heritability estimates varied from low (0.09) to moderate (0.28) across environmental gradients, whereas PY heritability remained low regardless of lactation number and environmental challenge. The study did not identify the occurrence of GEI effects on fat yield, irrespective of parity. No GEI effect was observed on MY or PY in the first and second lactations. However, in the third lactation, GEI affected significantly the MY and PY in Holstein cattle in the state of Paraná, particularly under extreme environmental gradients. The selection for MY, PY, and FY during the first lactation may be the best strategy to promote genetic progress in these traits, because of the smaller effect of GEI at this stage.
