Xenopygus Bernhauer is one of the most colorful staphylinid beetles and widespread in the Neotropical region. The aim of this study was to test the monophyly of Xenopygus based on adult morphology and to review the current species. Cladistic analysis was performed with six ingroup species, including two new species. Xenopygus is a monophyletic group supported by: antennomere V as wide as long to slightly wider, antennomere VII two times wider than long and superior line of pronotal hypomere developed, continuous on the anterior angle of pronotum. Xenopygus is composed of six species, four previously described and two new species, with the following topology: (( X. analis +( X. bicolor+X. confusus ))+( X. cordovensis +( X. sancticamillus , sp. nov.+ X. petilicolis, sp. nov.))). Xenopygus is the sister group to a clade formed by species of Dysanellus and Xanthopygus , corroborating previous phylogenetic studies. The genus, and all its species were redescribed, an identification key was produced and illustration diagnostic plates and distribution maps were also provided.

The tea of aerial parts of<i> Smilax larvata</i> Griseb. (Smilacaceae) has been ethnopharmacologically used in Southern Brazil due to its anti-inflammatory action. In this study, ethanolic and organic extracts from aerial parts of<i> S. larvata</i> were phytochemically and pharmacologically characterized. The phytochemical analysis of EtOAc extract of<i> S. larvata</i> revealed the presence of three flavonoids, drabanemoroside, kaempferol 3-<i>O</i>-<i>α</i>-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1<svg xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" style="vertical-align:-0.04980993pt" id="M1" height="6.27169pt" version="1.1" viewBox="-0.0498162 -6.22188 12.5482 6.27169" width="12.5482pt"><g transform="matrix(.013,0,0,-0.013,0,0)"><path id="g117-148" d="M901 255C861 290 790 361 716 442L694 427L796 280H69V230H796L694 83L716 68C790 149 861 220 901 255Z"/></g></svg>2)-<i>α</i>-L-rhamnopyranoside, and kaempferol, the first two being isolated for the first time in this genus, two phenolic compounds<i> p-</i>hydroxybenzoic acid and<i> p-</i>coumaric acid, and alkaloids. In vitro assays demonstrated a potential antioxidant property of SLG. The treatment with SLG induced a significant reduction of the formalin-evoked flinches in rats, an effect reversed by opioid antagonist naloxone. Treatment with SLG also induced a significant increase in the hot plate latency and a decrease of intestinal motility by 45%. No effect was observed over nociceptive responses induced by a TRPA1 agonist mustard oil or over acetic acid-induced writhing in mice. Together, our data suggested that SLG has an in vivo antinociceptive effect, which seems to be associated with the opioid system activation. These findings support previous claims of medical use of<i> Smilax larvata</i> in the treatment of pain conditions.
