Commercial exploration of swimming crab is rapidly increasing worldwide. In 2015, total production of crabs (fisheries plus aquaculture) reached almost 1300 thousand tons. One of the most valuable marketing forms is called “soft-shell crab”. The internet is one of the most important marketing channels for soft-shell crab, with prices starting at US$3.5 a unit, but going up to US$8.00–10.00, depending on the size and presentation form of the product (live, cooled, frozen, or processed). In luxury restaurants, a dish containing one large animal may cost well over US$75.00. Increasingly, this market requires exporting companies to present some kind of quality certification of the product or process (mainly certifications related to food safety). Almost all soft-shell crab production is based on crabs caught in the wild, by either trawling or trapping. Crab populations are suffering from environmental impacts associated with human activity, so much that obtaining the raw material (crabs in pre-molt stage) has become the biggest challenge for companies that market soft-shell swimming crab nowadays. Even recognizing the aquaculture as an alternate form to acquire crabs, it is necessary to understand that technology for commercial crab cultivation is still incipient and restricted to some species of few genera, such as Scylla, Portunus, and Callinectes. The present article reviews and discusses the problems and challenges related to the productive chain of soft-shell swimming crab, and presents an overview of the worldwide market, identifying the main exporting and importing centers, and their respective trading methods.

Pseudo-nitzschia is a diatom genus capable of producing the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA), which has been related to mortalities of marine vertebrates, and the amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in human consumers of contaminated bivalves. This study reports DA production among Pseudo-nitzschia strains isolated from shellfish farming areas in southern Brazil. Twenty-seven cultures of potentially toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia species were established. Growth, stepped-chain formation, and DA production were evaluated in static, intermittently illuminated (12:12 photoperiod) batch cultures for 12 selected strains, and under continuous light and/or turbulence for a single Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha strain. Growth rate ranged from 0.16 to 0.39 day−1 among the 12 strains. Only P. calliantha and P. cf. multiseries yielded detectable levels of intracellular DA, reaching up to 0.054 fg cell−1 in late exponential and 0.15 pg cell−1 in early stationary phase, respectively. Continuous light impaired cell growth, and turbulence enhanced step-chain formation by threefold during exponential growth phase, but no DA production was detected under both conditions. The effect of turbulence on chain formation should be further evaluated in the field, once particle size is expected to affect the ingestion of toxic cells and thus toxin accumulation by certain DA vectors. The low cell toxicity revealed herein under laboratory conditions is in accordance with the low frequency of DA contamination episodes in south Brazilian waters. Nevertheless, monitoring of Pseudo-nitzschia abundance and DA presence in farming areas is continuously required to assure the quality of local shellfish products.

Broilers have better production rates when housed in thermal comfort conditions, outside of this zone the poultry need to maintain homeothermy. The heat production and thermal exchanges are related to body weight and available surface for heat exchange. The genetic evolution of broilers ensured high production with improvement in the feed conversion and reducing the slaughter time. The faster weight gain difficult sensible heat exchange, increasing the needs for climatization systems, in days with high temperatures. Changes in heat waves frequency and days with extreme temperatures are challenging situations for ventilation and evaporative cooling systems in broiler facilities. This review discusses heat exchanges of broilers and the challenges in maintaining the thermal comfort zone in poultry facilities, in a reality of increase of heat stress conditions.

The present study aimed to identify and screen the antibacterial activity of a mixture of sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) obtained from the dichloromethane extract of Smallanthus sonchifolius leaves. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica strains were used as bacterial tests. The identification and quantification of compounds were established by GC/MS and 1H, 13C 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis. The antimicrobial activity was measured by the disk diffusion method and minimal inhibitory concentration assay (MIC). In vitro antimicrobial assays showed that the mixture of SLs found (uvedalin and enhydrin) displays poor antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacteria and appreciable antibacterial properties against the Gram-positive bacterial strain tested when 90 µg of the SLs mixture per disk was used. The MIC determination against S. aureus revealed that a concentration of 750 µg of SLs mixture mL−1 should be necessary to inhibit the strain. These results indicate that the SLs mixture of enhydrin and uvedalin from yacon leaves presents promising antibacterial properties against S. aureus and apparent lack of activity against the Gram-negative bacterial strains tested at the concentrations applied.
