This study evaluated the effect of reducing dietary protein levels with essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation in soybean meal and corn-based diets on the performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) during the fattening phase. A total of 195 GIFT-lineage tilapia (initial weight 297±5.06 g) were randomly assigned to five treatments, with three replicates per treatment. The fish in each treatment were fed for 70 days with a diet containing one of five crude protein (CP) levels (300, 275, 249, 222, or 197 g kg−1). All diets were isoenergetic and isoaminoacidic for EAA. Fish fed higher CP levels (249, 275, and 300 g kg−1) had significantly better performance in final weight (553.66–560.37 g; P = 1.44e−05), weight gain (256.35–260.35 g; P = 6.06e−06), specific growth rate (0.88–0.90; P = 2.68e−05), and feed conversion ratio (1.56–1.58; P = 9.69e−06) compared to fish fed 197 and 222 g kg−1 CP. Protein efficiency ratio was highest (2.78; P = 0.0132) with CP level 249 g kg−1, while carcass protein content was significantly higher with CP levels 275 and 300 g kg−1 CP (17.35 and 17.08 g 100 g−1, respectively; P = 0.0118). Regression analysis using the broken-line model estimated dietary requirements of 229 g kg−1 digestible protein (DP) and 248 g kg−1 CP. This study demonstrates that reducing CP from 300 to 248 g kg−1 (269 to 228 g kg−1 DP), with adequate EAA supplementation in soybean meal and corn-based diets, maintains growth performance in Nile tilapia weighing 300–530 g, whereas further reductions impair performance.

Abstract: Understanding the factors that affect cambial activity can provide historical documentation of events influencing plant growth and development. This study aimed to link cambial activity and diameter increment of native and exotic species in a floodplain forest in SE Brazil with phenological and meteorological data to answer the following questions: Is species diameter growth influenced by meteorological variables and phenological behavior? Is cambial activity seasonal, with active and inactive periods? Is cell differentiation for initial wood formation triggered by any phenological phase? Diameter increment was measured with dendrometer tapes, cambial activity through vascular cambium samples collection, and phenological behavior through the intensity index. Vegetative structures (mature leaves, senescent leaves, and buds) and reproductive structures (anthesis, immature fruit, and mature fruit) were monitored on a monthly basis. The relationship between meteorological variables and phenophases that lead ro diameter increment was analyzed using multiple linear regression. Additionally, logistic regressions was employed to examine the connection between phenophase variables and cambial activity. The results indicate that the duration of the growing season differs among species, ranging from seven to nine months. Gymnanthes klotzschiana and Blepharocalyx salicifolius showed their highest rates of radial increment from November to March, while Hovenia dulcis and Ligustrum lucidum, from August to April. The increase in diameter for these species is positively influenced by specific phenophases. For G. klotzschiana, these include the presence of mature leaves, senescent leaves, and immature fruits, while for H. dulcis, the presence of mature leaves, senescent leaves, and mature fruits. Moreover, cambial activity is seasonal, with both active and inactive periods occurring mainly in the spring and summer in the four species studied. Different phenological signals were identified as triggers for the initial wood formation, namely, the presence of senescent leaves in G. klotzschiana, budding in H. dulcis, and mature fruits and senescent leaves in L. lucidum. No relationship was found between phenophases and cambial activity or inactivity periods in B. salicifolius.

(en) This study evaluated the relationships among Landsat 8 OLI products, surface fuel load, and moisture content in Cerrado grassland environments. Sixty-eight sampling units, with a minimum distance of 100 m between them, were used in this study. The pixel values associated with the field plots were obtained from a 3 x 3-pixel window by extracting the median values of each polygon. After receiving the satellite images corresponding to the in situ data collection period and tabulating the information, Pearson's linear correlation analyses were performed between the fuel load and independent variables derived from image processing. Dead herbaceous fuel and the soil fraction of the spectral mixture analyses showed strong correlations, with r = -0.81 for load and r = -0.60 for moisture content. For reflectance of the Landsat 8 bands, the highest correlations were observed between dead herbaceous fuel and near-infrared, with r = -0.68 (load) and r = -0.61 (moisture). The correlations between dead herbaceous fuel and the MSI (r = 0.77), NDII6, and GVMI (r = -0.77) indices for fuel load stood out among the vegetation indices. Fuel moisture was negatively correlated with the DER23 (r = -0.57) and MNDWI (r = -0.56) indices and positively correlated with MSI (r = 0.47). The relationships between load and moisture in the dead fuel classes were more substantial, particularly for the dead herbaceous fuel load.
(pt) Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as relações entre os produtos do Landsat 8 OLI e a carga e umidade do combustível superficial em ambientes campestres do Cerrado. Foram coletadas 68 unidades de amostragem, mantendo um distanciamento mínimo de 100 metros entre elas. Os valores dos pixels associados às parcelas de campo foram obtidos a partir de uma janela de 3 x 3 pixels, extraindo-se os valores medianos de cada polígono. Após obter as imagens de satélite correspondentes ao período de coleta dos dados in loco e tabular as informações, realizou-se análises de correlação linear de Pearson entre a carga do combustível e as variáveis independentes derivadas do processamento das imagens. As correlações mais significativas ocorreram entre combustível herbáceo morto e fração-solo das análises de mistura espectral, com r = -0,81 para carga e r = -0,60 para umidade. Em relação à reflectância das bandas do Landsat 8, as maiores correlações foram entre combustível herbáceo morto e o infravermelho próximo, com r = -0,68 (carga) e r = -0,61 (umidade). Nos índices de vegetação, destacaram-se as correlações entre combustível herbáceo morto e os índices MSI (r = 0,77), NDII6 e GVMI (r = -0,77) para carga de combustível. Para a umidade do combustível, houve correlações negativas com os índices DER23 (r = -0,57) e MNDWI (r = -0,56) e positiva com o MSI (r = 0,47). As relações foram mais fortes entre carga e umidade nas classes de combustíveis mortos, especialmente com a carga de combustível herbáceo morto.

(en) Shrimp farming is evolving towards intensification to enhance productivity and optimize resource usage. The growth of this sector is closely linked to the availability of high-quality postlarvae and juveniles. Intensive nurseries in two-phase systems play a crucial role in improving survival and growth rates during the grow out phase. However, this approach necessitates skilled labor and feeds with high crude protein content, which are expensive and potentially risky to water quality, and therefore to animal health. Therefore, it is essential to develop strategies that improve this farming system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing commercial feed with different levels of fermented soybean meal (FSB; 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) using a commercial probiotic composed of a mixture of microorganisms during the culture of Penaeus vannamei postlarvae in an intensive nursery. The water quality, zooplankton density, and standard bacterial plate count of Vibrio spp. in water culture were evaluated. Daily weight gain, average final weight, and final productivity were affected by the 75% replacement. Shrimp fed with up to 50% replacement exhibited superior growth. Survival was not impacted by the replacement levels, remaining above 79%. Total zooplankton density was higher in the FSB 25% treatment ( P < 0.05). The Vibrio spp. standard plate count was influenced by the different replacement levels, with 50% replacement reaching the highest levels ( P < 0.05). Results showed that FSB can replace up to 50% of commercial feed for postlarvae during intensive nursery, maintaining growth rates similar to those achieved with commercial feed protocols.

(pt) Sarcóide equino é a neoplasia cutânea mais frequente na espécie e, apesar do caráter benigno, representa um desafio devido à terapêutica não consolidada e alta taxa de recidiva dos tumores. Dúvidas acerca da etiologia e as diversas manifestações clínicas da doença também contribuem para esse desafio. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo relatar o caso de sarcóide fibroblástico altamente recidivante em um equino com temperamento agitado e extremamente reativo, atendido no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Campus Curitiba. O exame histopatológico confirmou sarcóide equino e as características morfológicas das lesões apontaram para sarcóide do tipo fibroblástico e do tipo oculto. Além das lesões sarcóides ao longo da superfície corporal do animal, observou-se, no decorrer do tratamento, desenvolvimento de massa gengival bilateral. O tratamento seguiu protocolos convencionais relatados em literatura, além da utilização da seiva de Euphorbia tirucalli (aveloz), devido às suas propriedades antitumorais. Apesar da elevada taxa de recidiva e do tratamento prolongado, houve remissão de todas as lesões apresentadas.
