The present era is widely recognized as the nanotechnology era, partly because of significant advances in nanomaterial development over the past few decades. This growth in the field has led to substantial increases in the production, consumption, and disposal of nanoparticles (NPs). One of the most widely used is zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). These NPs attract attention due to their specific properties and potential applications. Presenting potential applications across biomedical, medical, agricultural, and healthcare fields, as well as in the development of antimicrobial and photocatalytic materials. Therefore, this review aims to synthesize the current knowledge about the main characteristics of ZnO-NPs, their toxicological mechanisms, and environmental effects on aquatic organisms, with a focus on fish species. The findings provide a wide comparison of the main characteristics – synthesis methods, size, shape, concentration, surface chemistry, and sedimentation, which influence the toxicity. As a consequence, some studies are exploring strategies to mitigate toxic effects, as green-synthesis of ZnO-NPs and the use of antioxidant substances, offering new insights to reduce environmental risks. The primary toxic effects recognized of ZnO-NPs on fish were the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), followed by the release of Zn2 + ions by dissolution of the NPs. Therefore, the toxicological effects were characterized by an increase in the response of the antioxidant system’s enzymatic components and the differential expression of genes involved in the oxidative stress pathway. The alternative synthesis mode was explored in a few studies; in addition to supplementation with vitamins E and C, thymol, selenium, and resveratrol were able to mitigate the toxic effects of ZnO-NPs. The results in the literature reinforce the importance of environmental monitoring and future discussions on regulations regarding the use, production, and disposal of ZnO NPs, in order to ensure the protection of aquatic environments and organisms.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin disease with significant physical and quality-of-life impacts. In Brazil, its estimated incidence is 1.3%. Due to the complexity of the disease, effective management requires addressing multiple factors, with treatment adherence and persistence being critical challenges. Aim: To evaluate the correlation between psoriasis severity and treatment adherence and persistence among patients in Paraná, Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 133 psoriasis patients treated at the three primary specialized care centers in the state, between January 28, 2022, and December 9, 2022. Results: A negative correlation (−0.102, rs² = 1.04%) was observed between psoriasis severity and treatment adherence. Conversely, there was a positive correlation (0.2444, rs² = 5.97%) between psoriasis severity and treatment discontinuation history. Conclusion: Treatment interruptions were correlated with increased psoriasis severity, whereas higher adherence was associated with milder clinical manifestations. Relevance for patients: These findings underscore the critical role of consistent treatment adherence in managing psoriasis. Interruptions in treatment are linked to more severe forms of psoriasis, highlighting the detrimental effects of non-adherence. In contrast, patients who maintained high levels of adherence experienced less severe symptoms, emphasizing that consistent treatment is key to improved disease control. Strengthening patient-provider collaboration and adherence strategies can improve clinical outcomes and enhance quality of life.

Triplophyllum is a pantropical fern genus found in the tropical forests of Madagascar, Western Africa, and the Neotropics. In the Neotropics, most of its species have a wide distribution in the lowlands of the Amazon, with some reaching the foothills of the Andes and the Guyana Shield at the Amazonian borders, Central America and the Antilles, as well as the Atlantic Forest in northeastern and southeastern Brazil. Recent collections in the southern limits of the Amazon have revealed an undescribed species, which is described herein as Triplophyllum juruenense. This species is restricted to the meridional portion of the Amazon, where the tropical Amazonian forest meets the drier vegetation of Central Brazil. The new species is described and compared to its closest relatives. Illustrations and a distribution map are also provided.

The flora of the Campos Rupestres has been increasingly studied in the municipality of Monte Azul, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a region considered a frontier of botanical knowledge, which has recently yielded new species. From this same area, we now describe two new species of Phyllanthus, along with the discovery of a distinctive anatomical trait in Phyllanthaceae: a thickened outer periclinal wall of the epidermis, rich in lipidic substances and forming pectic microchannels in one of the analyzed and described species. Although the two species are sympatric, they differ markedly in their morphological characters. Phyllanthus roseocalyx exhibits cylindrical phylloclades, distinctly pedicellate pistillate flowers, and staminate flowers with two stamens bearing horizontally dehiscent anthers. In contrast, Phyllanthus monteazulensis has flattened phylloclades, sessile pistillate flowers, and staminate flowers with three stamens and vertically dehiscent anthers. In addition, measurable characteristics of the phylloclades and flowers were used to compare the new species with other morphologically similar taxa of Phyllanthus that also bear phylloclades. This study includes morphological comparisons with similar species, a preliminary conservation assessment, illustrations, photographs, and distribution maps.
