Given the ecological significance and potential for afforestation and carbon sequestration of these species, this study contributes to optimizing nursery practices for successful regeneration and conservation efforts. Thus, this research assessed the physical and physiological seed quality and seedling production of Sequoia sempervirens, Sequoiadendron giganteum, and Pseudotsuga menziesii. For seed characteristics the following were tested: (I) Tetrazolium at concentrations: 0.0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%; (II) moisture content and thousand-seed weight; (III) in-lab germination; and (IV) the classification of seeds’ viability through the use of a seed blower. Meanwhile, seedling production was tested: (I) five compositions of substrates and (II) doses of a controlled-release fertilizer (14-14-14): 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 g L−1, for S. giganteum. The seed evaluations revealed no significant effect of tetrazolium concentrations on determining their viability. The water content results classify all species as orthodox. All species’ seeds were classified as small according to the weight of a thousand seeds. A maximum of 41% germination was observed for both S. sempervirens and S. giganteum, this value was 56% for P. menziesii, attributed to non-viability and emptiness. The seed blower increased germination by more than 20% for S. giganteum and almost 40% for P. menziesii. Seedling production was affected by the substrates, and a dosage of 4.0 g L−1 of the controlled-release fertilizer is recommended for S. giganteum.

This systematic review examines off-flavors in farmed freshwater fish, which compromise sensory quality and consumer acceptance, resulting in financial losses. Using the PRISMA method, 7,576 documents from the Scopus and Web of Science databases were analyzed, resulting in the selection of 44 studies published within the last six years. The articles were examined for their objectives, studied species, farming systems, main findings, gaps, and suggestions for future research. The studies highlight the influence of water quality, climatic conditions, management practices, and feeding, with an emphasis on the presence of cyanobacteria, algal blooms, fungi, and metabolic compounds, particularly geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, which are the main contributors to unpleasant tastes and odors. The review highlights the need to enhance management practices and control of these compounds, while also suggesting new research to develop more effective and accessible mitigation methods. The importance of continuous water quality monitoring is emphasized as an essential strategy to prevent the formation of off-flavors. In summary, the review provides a comprehensive overview of undesirable tastes and odors in freshwater fish, identifies knowledge gaps, and proposes directions for future investigations, which are crucial for the sustainability and quality of aquaculture production.

Several methods are implemented to improve the quality and productivity of Eucalyptus plantations, including genetic improvement and seedling fertilization. These practices, combined with the favorable soil and climate conditions across much of Brazil, have enabled high yield forest production. These plantations supply raw materials for a wide range of industrial uses, notably the manufacture of wood panels. Among them, edge glued panel are produced by joining battens laterally or on their surface using adhesive bonds. This work aimed to evaluate the technological potential of Eucalyptus dunnii (white gum) wood from different fertilization treatments and genetic sources for the production of edge glued panels. The material was collected from a plantation with trees 8,5 years old in Pinhais, Parana, and included 24 trees: 12 from clonal material and 12 from selected seeds. Each genetic source was subjected to two fertilization treatments (conventional and slow-release) and one control, resulting in six treatments. The wood was analyzed for volumetric, chemical and physical properties. After drying, battens were glued and the strength of the adhesive joints was tested. Clonal trees exhibited the highest volume and the lowest basic density. The lowest anisotropic coefficient was found in wood subjected to slow release fertilization. Fertilization also influenced all aspects of chemical composition. Overall, the treatments with clonal trees and slow release fertilization showed the highest suitability for edge glued panel production, justifying the investment in silvicultural practices from the point of view of wood technology.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the external body surface temperature and the temperature and humidity index (ITU) of black and red coat cattle grazing in a comparison between pastoral and silvopastoral systems. To this end, six evaluations were carried out in two systems (with and without the presence of trees), at three different times of the day (8am, 11am and 2pm) in red and black coat animals. The body surface temperature of the steers was measured using a thermographic camera (FLIR C2®). ITU was calculated from the temperature and relative humidity obtained from automatic weather stations located in both systems. Body surface temperature was 2.7 oC lower in the silvopastoral system than in the pastoral system (P<0,05). Body surface temperatures at 11am and 2pm were 3.6 oC higher than at 8am. Body surface temperature was similar between the black and red coats. The ITU of the pastoral system was in danger, while the silvopastoral system remained at the critical level. For the average daily gain, no statistically significant differences were observed between the systems (P = 0.944). The presence of trees in pastoral systems is beneficial for thermal comfort, reducing heat stress and promoting animal welfare.

Global food production faces mounting climate and health pressures, creating demand for agricultural systems that regenerate soils, recycle nutrients, improve human diets, reduce emissions, and minimize chemical inputs while maintaining farmer livelihoods. Integrated crop–livestock systems (ICLS), extensively researched in Brazil, offer a viable pathway to meet these combined challenges. This communication highlights evidence from long-term experiments and comparative studies showing how ICLS improve resource efficiency and food supply. We synthesize findings from multi-year field experiments and simulation studies that evaluate grazing management, soil nutrient cycling, carbon dynamics, and human-edible nutrient outputs under contrasting hydroclimatic conditions. Grazing animals provide functional synergies in ICLS by recycling nutrients through feces and urine, modifying soil structure via hooves, and enhancing soil–microbiota connectivity. Well-managed grazing increases soil carbon by up to 20% in mixed systems, improves nitrogen use efficiency, and decreases fertilizer dependence. Evidence from soybean–livestock rotations show energy and protein yields for human consumption rising by 24–28% compared to ungrazed systems, while diversified rice–livestock systems reduce unsustainability indexes and increase renewability by more than 120%. Nutritional yield analyses demonstrate that moderate grazing intensities buffer energy, protein, and micronutrient supply against drought stress, outperforming pure crop systems in both productivity and stability. ICLS simultaneously generate plant and animal foods from the same land, enhancing food quantity, nutritional diversity, and resilience while preserving arable soils. For farmers, ICLS diversifies income, reduces chemical costs, and strengthens adaptive capacity. Rooted in Brazilian innovation, these results demonstrate that livestock integration is essential to sustainable intensification and agricultural adaptation to climate variability today and in the future.
