Time series analysis comprises a wide repertoire of methods for extracting information from data sets. Despite great advances in time series analysis, identifying and quantifying the strength of nonlinear temporal correlations remain a challenge. We have recently proposed a new method based on training a machine learning algorithm to predict the temporal correlation parameter, α, of flicker noise (FN) time series. The algorithm is trained using as input features the probabilities of ordinal patterns computed from FN time series, xαFN(t), generated with different values of α. Then, the ordinal probabilities computed from the time series of interest, x(t), are used as input features to the trained algorithm and that returns a value, αe, that contains meaningful information about the temporal correlations present in x(t). We have also shown that the difference, Ω, of the permutation entropy (PE) of the time series of interest, x(t), and the PE of a FN time series generated with α=αe, xαeFN(t), allows the identification of the underlying determinism in x(t). Here, we apply our methodology to different datasets and analyze how αe and Ω correlate with well-known quantifiers of chaos and complexity. We also discuss the limitations for identifying determinism in highly chaotic time series and in periodic time series contaminated by noise. The open source algorithm is available on Github.

This work was conducted with the objective of improving the physicochemical properties of flaxseed gum with added agar. Three formulations of flaxseed gum/agar (FG/AG) blends (75/25, 50/50 and 25/75) were studied in the presence of glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent and a glycerol plasticizing agent. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as reinforcing agents at different levels (2%, 4% and 8% w/w) to prepare nanocomposite films by casting polymeric blends of flax seed and agar with both additives. The interaction with water (vapor permeability and solubility), scanning electron microscopy and tensile tests were performed for films, blends and nanocomposites. The flaxseed gum, agar and additives showed good homogeneity, as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. All the formulations presented tenacity increase between 585 and 811%, and lower values of solubility relative to the control film (FGcontrol). The best formulation of nanocomposites was 50/50–4% CNCs, that presented higher modulus of elasticity and increase in tenacity of 130% relative to the 50/50 blend and 1588% relative to the control film. The results showed that AG and CNC can modulate the properties of FG, opening numerous opportunities for investigation. Due to the significant improvement in the mechanical properties, FG/AG blends and nanocomposites have excellent potential in applications as sustainable packaging.

This article aims to present a report of the development of the Guia de Fontes @UFPR, a search tool for scientific information created by the Agency School of Public Communication and Scientific and Cultural Dissemination (AE) of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). In this context, the paper discusses information and scientific content management from an interdisciplinary point of view and describes the development of the software covering Journalism, Information Management and Computing, areas of knowledge in which the methodological principles of the Guia de Fontes @UFPR are based. In conclusion, the work also presents the results under the Scientific Popularization.

This writing aims to identify initial provisions to soccer practice and the formation of a habitus of soccer in women, therefore, were conducted four semi-structured interviews with players of a football team from Curitiba/PR that throughout their careers participated in offi cial matches defending the Brazilian National Women's soccer. After analyzing the information, we conclude that the initial arrangements for the practice of soccer are based on six steps shared by all interviewees, and that the necessary arrangements for them to step into the space of soccer are not the same as it maintains.

O presente escrito tem como objetivo identificar disposições iniciais à prática do futebol e a formação de um habitus futebolístico em mulheres, para tanto, foram realizadas quatro entrevistas semiestruturadas com jogadoras de uma equipe de futebol da cidade de Curitiba/PR que no decorrer de suas carreiras participaram de partidas oficiais defendendo a Seleção Brasileira de Futebol Feminino. Após análise das informações, concluímos que as disposições iniciais para a prática do futebol baseiam-se em seis etapas compartilhadas por todas as entrevistadas, e que as disposições necessárias para elas adentrarem o espaço do futebol não são as mesmas que as mantém nele.
