ABSTRACT The objective was to explore publications on the effects of genotype × environment interaction (GEI) in livestock farming. The dataset used for this analysis came from the Web of Science (WOS) database, and the search was carried out from the first article identified in the WOS database until the search date (August 17, 2023). A set of minimum parameters was defined, and then the data was processed using the VOSviewer® software. To generate visual representations in VOSviewer, fractional counting [...]

Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil.) can provide many valuable phytochemicals such as methylxanthines, caffeine and theobromine, and caffeoylquinic acids (CQA or CGA– chlorogenic acids). It is necessary to establish cultivation protocols to meet the demand for raw materials with specific phytochemical profiles. In this study, we analyzed the content and yield of bioactive compounds in leaves of two yerba mate clones submitted to increasing concentrations of nitrogen for two years in a semi-hydroponic cultivation system. The leaves were classified as young or mature and ground after drying in a microwave. The aqueous extracts were analyzed using an Ultra-Fast Liquid Chromatograph (UFLC). The yield was calculated by multiplying compound contents by the leaf dry mass. Young leaves had higher contents of all compounds than mature leaves. Clone EC40 showed higher contents of caffeine, 4-CQA, and 5-CQA, and this genotype showed a higher yield of all compounds, except for theobromine, when compared to EC22. Increasing nitrogen concentration increased methylxanthines contents; however, the yield of compounds decreased with higher N concentration due to reduced leaf mass production. At the concentration of maximum productivity, 206 mg L-1 of N, the compound yield reached up to 21 g m-2 year-1 of caffeine, and 126 g m-2 year-1 of CQAs in clone EC40. These results demonstrate that the proposed cultivation system is viable, especially with the industrial purpose of extracting yerba mate bioactive compounds. The increase of N in this system does not favor the productivity of bioactive compounds, as it reduces leaf production. The most viable way to suit the desired level of these bioactive compounds in yerba mate leaves seems to be by selecting leaves and clones.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of bud load on the agronomic performance and composition of volatile compounds of the ‘Fiano’ grapevine cultivated in Southern Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a commercial vineyard in the municipality of Campo Largo, Paraná (Southern Brazil) in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons. Vines were Guyot-pruned and evaluated according to different bud loads: 10, 20, 30 and 40 buds per plant. Agronomic performance, technological maturity and the volatile compounds were evaluated, and the data were submitted for variance analysis. The mean values were compared using the Tukey test (p < 0.05). The volatile compounds in the wines were identified using gas chromatography (GC-MS/HS-SPME). The loads of 30 and 40 buds per plant showed an increase in productivity and the maintenance of the physical characteristics and technological ripeness of the grapes. A higher bud load resulted in a larger leaf area and better values for the Ravaz Index. However, the highest bud load (40 buds per plant) reduced the sprouting and shoot length, while a bud load of 30 buds per plant presented the best agronomic performance in the subtropical region of Southern Brazil. The physical characteristics of the bunches and the technological ripeness were not affected, and the increase in bud load did not alter most of the volatile compounds of ‘Fiano’ wines. However, some volatile compounds, such as diethyl succinate and linalool, presented higher concentrations in wines with the lowest yields (10 buds per plant).

The objective of this research was to test selected and validated generic and species-specific equations to estimate three different hollow diameter measurements in native commercial trees from a managed forest in the state of Pará, Brazil. A sample of 4,912 hollow trees, involving 29 species, was used to model the mean hollow diameter at tree level, and another composed of 3,867 hollow trees, belonging to 28 species, was used to model the mean hollow diameter of the first log of the commercial stem and the hollow diameter at the base of the tree. 30% of the two samples were previously randomly separated to validate the equations. The variables diameter at breast height (DBH), commercial height (hc), diameter of the log at the base of the tree (Db) and stem quality (SQ) were used in the modeling. In general, the models showed low adjusted coefficients of determination and the relevant standard errors of estimation. Despite this, validation indicated that the equations could generate accurate estimates. It has been found that it is more efficient, in terms of accuracy, to estimate the mean hollow diameter of the first log of the commercial stem, although it is more practical to estimate the hollow diameter at the base of the tree. Compared to generic equations, specific equations can generate more accurate estimates. Therefore, the hollow diameter in commercial trees can be estimated as a function of variables obtained from the forest inventory, and the best strategy is the use of species-specific equations to estimate the average hollow diameter in the initial portion of the commercial stem.
