Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) is the most produced mushroom in the world and has a long incubation period, which precedes the productive phase, being the only mushroom produced in axenic blocks, which, after completing the mycelial colonization, initiates the maturation of the mycelium forming a brown cover. Many producers are told that when they find contaminated blocks in their production, they must discard them immediately. On the other hand, producers report that over the fruiting period, some blocks contaminate more than others. The objective of this work is to identify the best incubation period for productivity and occurrence of contaminants. Incubation periods of 70, 80, 90, 100 and 110 days were tested. Production precocity, productivity and biological efficiency, average number and mass of mushrooms, brown cap formation area, number of points of contamination and identification of contaminant species were evaluated. The results obtained show that the best incubation period was 70 days.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of genotype-environment interaction (GEI) on the manifestation of traits such as age at first calving (AFC), age at first service (AFS), and calving interval (CI) through the application of the reaction norm model in Holstein cattle raised in Paraná state, Brazil. Utilizing data from the milk testing service of the Paraná Association of Holstein Cattle Breeders (APCBRH), this study analyzed records from 179,492 animals undergoing their first, second, and third lactations from the years 2012 to 2022. These animals were part of 513 herds spread across 72 municipalities in Paraná. The environmental gradient was established by normalizing contemporary group solutions, derived from the animal model, with the 305-day-corrected milk yield serving as the dependent variable. Subsequently, reaction norms were determined utilizing a Random Regression Model. Spearman’s correlation was then applied to compare the estimates of breeding values across different environmental gradients for the studied traits. The highest EG (+ 4) indicates the least challenging environments, where animals experience better environmental conditions. Conversely, lower EG (-4) values represent the most challenging environments, where animals endure worse conditions. The only trait that exhibited a moderate heritability magnitude was AFC (0.23) in the least challenging environmental condition. The other traits were classified as having low heritability magnitudes regardless of the evaluated environmental gradient. While minimal evidence was found for the influence of GEI on CI, a clear GEI effect was observed for AFC and AFS across all environmental gradients examined. A reversal in genotype ranking occurred under extreme environmental conditions. The findings suggest that the best-performing genotype under one environmental gradient may not necessarily excel under another.

The rapid growth of shrimp farming, particularly of Penaeus vannamei, accounts for about 80% of the global production of farmed shrimp and involves the cultivation of approximately 383 to 977 billion individuals annually, which highlights the urgent need to address the ethical and technical implications of raising potentially sentient beings. This study builds on the state-of-the-art assessment of sentience, consciousness, stress, distress, nociception, pain perception, and welfare to adapt the General Welfare Index (GWI) for farmed shrimp. The GWI is a quantitative index developed by our research group to measure the degree of welfare in aquaculture, and it has been previously applied to grass carp and tilapia. Using the PRISMA methodology and the creation of a hypothetical shrimp farm, the GWI, with 31 specific and measurable indicators across various welfare domains, is adapted to P. vannamei, offering a comprehensive assessment framework. The inclusion of quantitative welfare indicators promises to improve living conditions in alignment with legislation adopted on decapods’ sentience and contemporary scientific advances.

Needle chlorosis (NC) in Pinus taeda L. systems in Brazil becomes more frequent after second and third harvest rotation cycles. In a study to identify factors contributing to yellowing needle chorosis (YNC), trees were grown in soils originating from contrasting parent materials, and soils and needles (whole, green and chlorotic portions) from 1- and 2-year-old branches and the first and second needle flush release at four sites with YNC on P. taeda were analyzed for various elements and properties. All soils had very low base levels (Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+) and P, suggesting a possible lack of multiple elements. YNC symptoms started at needle tips, then extended toward the needle base with time. First flush needles had longer portions with YNC than second flush needles did. Needles from the lower crown also had more symptoms along their length than those higher in the canopy. Symptoms were similar to those reported for Mg. In chlorotic portions, Mg and Ca concentrations were well below critical values; in particular, Mg levels were only one third of the critical value of 0.3 g kg−1. Collectively, results suggest that Mg deficiency is the primary reason for NC of P. taeda in various parent soils in Brazil.
