There is a lack of long-term information on the use of industry forest residues in Pinus taeda L plantations for purposes of enhancing sustainability. The study goal was to evaluate tree growth and nutrition, soil chemical properties, litter accumulation, and weed occurrence in a Pinus taeda L. system amended with alkaline residues from recycled paper. The residues were broadcasted at planting using different rates (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha−1) on a sandy soil with low fertility. Tree diameter and height along with soil chemical properties were monitored for 15 years. At 15 years samples of litter, weeds, and soil were collected for evaluation. Over 15 years of monitoring, no changes in tree growth or final yield were observed despite increased Ca and reduced Mn foliar tissue concentrations. Low Mg concentration in needles combined with symptoms resembling Mg deficiency and a high increase in Ca levels, suggest that this nutrient could be a limiting factor in tree response. At the same time, a reduction in weed mass with residue application was verified. Residue amendment increased soil Ca and attenuated acidity down to 60 cm after 15 years with the maximum effect on soil properties at ~ 13 years. Litter decreased from 36.2 (control) to 26.9 Mg ha−1 (highest rate) but increased Ca and diminished Al concentrations. The alkaline residue (rich in Ca) improved soil chemical properties at the surface and subsurface, decreased weed growth, increased Ca and reduced Mn in needles, but probably failed to increase tree yield due to an Mg deficiency.

Minicutting has been used for several woody species, presenting greater efficiency than propagation by conventional cutting due to its high yield of propagative material and higher percentage of rooting in minicuttings. This work was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of minicutting techniques for the ‘Bluegem’ blueberry and find the best concentration of IBA for rooting the minicuttings. The minigarden was installed in pots using micropropagated plants. Four collections of minicuttings were carried out between 27 October 2020 and 12 April 2021, and received the following treatments: 0; 2000; 4000; 6000; and 8000 mg L−1 of IBA. The minicutting was carried out in a mist chamber and evaluated after 60 days. The yield of minicuttings increased from the first to the third collection, decreasing in the fourth collection when the plants began to enter dormancy. The rooting of the minicuttings was influenced by the collection time and the application of IBA. Increasing IBA concentration increased the percentage of rooted minicuttings and root dry mass to concentrations close to 5000 mg L−1 on almost all collection dates. High concentrations of IBA reduced the percentage of sprouted minicuttings and leaf retention and increased mortality. It is recommended for the ‘Bluegem’ blueberry minicutting to apply 5000 mg L−1 of IBA.

Each day Brazil increases the consumption and makes legislation more flexible for the regulation and use of pesticides. Along the dismantling of public policies, responsible for the mechanisms of public health and the environment, the population is put at risk, especially the most vulnerable groups. Oppose to the abusive use of pesticides in Brazil, directly linked to the position of a peripheral economy that the country occupies and, to the role of a permissive State, was the objective of this work. This is a reflective study on the characterization of a model of necropolitics, with emphasis on the period from 2019 to 2022, whose exacerbated growth in the records and consumption of pesticides took place. The advance of the neoliberal agenda, the growth of agribusiness, and the deepening of inequalities, determine the scenario of necropolitics, posed by the State, with serious consequences for society. Thus, the fight for public policies in favour of family farming, organic and agroecology becomes urgent.

White striping (WS) is a myopathy characterized by the appearance of white stripes parallel to the muscle fibers in the breast of broiler chickens, composed of adipose and connective tissues. This condition causes economic losses and, although common, its etiology remains poorly understood. Hence, the objective was to identify genes and biological mechanisms involved in the early stages of WS using a paternal broiler line that grows slightly slower than commercial ones, at 35 days of age, through the RNA sequencing of the pectoralis major muscle. Thirty genes were differentially expressed between normal and WS-affected chickens, with 23 upregulated and 7 downregulated in the affected broilers. Of these, 14 genes are novel candidates for WS and are implicated in biological processes related to muscle development (CEPBD, DUSP8, METTL21EP, NELL2, and UBE3D), lipid metabolism (PDK4, DDIT4, FKBP5, DGAT2, LIPG, TDH, and RGCC), and collagen (COL4A5 and COL4A6). Genes related to changes in muscle fiber type and the processes of apoptosis, autophagy, proliferation, and differentiation are possibly involved with the initial stage of WS development. In contrast, the genes linked to lipid metabolism and collagen may have their expression altered due to the progression of the myopathy.
