The equine carpal joint is relevant in clinical and surgical veterinary practices, with the use of ultrasound being very helpful as a complementary exam to diagnose some diseases that involves the principal structures of this articulation. Due to the lack in studies that illustrate the morphological aspect of this region in health horses and for it complexity, it is this study goal to present a meticulous description of the compared ultrasonographic anatomy of the equine carpal joint. For this study, anatomical pieces from equine thoracic limbs were used, being two already dissecated and fixated in formol and four pieces presented in transversal cuts, in order to prioritize the evaluation of the most important structures for clinical practice in the dorsal, medial, lateral and palmar aspects of the equine carpal joint. With the use of ultrasonographic exam in two health horses belonging to the College of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechny, FMVZ/Unesp – Botucatu/SP, longitudinal and transverse images of the respective dissected structures in the anatomical study were generated, wich were evaluated for ecotexture, echogenicity and thickness. From both studies, a correlation was made between the macroscopic structures from the anatomical pieces and the ultrasonographic representations, leading to the development of teaching images and musculoskeletical structures description of the carpal joint, generated in order to help on it’s study.

Mixed planting when well managed can be more efficient in the production of biomass and in the use of available resources, thus increasing the profits of planting. The objectives of this research were to quantify the biomass of a mixed plantation of Pinus taeda and Pinus elliottii, by the direct method and to verify the allocation of biomass between the components and the production of biomass per unit area of the mixed plantation and of the two species studied. From the forest census carried out in the mixed planting of 43.5 ha, at 16 years of age, the diametric distribution of the population was generated. Based on the diametric classes, 60 trees were randomly sampled by the direct method, 30 trees for each species. Then, the aerial biomass production in the different components of the tree for both species was evaluated and compared. Mixed planting produced 171.5 t ha-1 of biomass; the shaft represented more than 60% of the biomass. The biomass production in Pinus taeda was superior to Pinus elliottii. The biomass of branches, in turn, was significantly different between species. The stratified tree technique revealed that biomass production in the stand was lower than the biomass obtained by the direct method. In this technique, the biomass (t ha-1) was superior to Pinus elliottii, due to the frequency of individuals in the forest census being higher in the central diameter class, and the species having a larger number of individuals in the stand.

Lying behavior is an important indicator of the cows’ welfare and health. In this study, we evaluate the effect of the physical environment on dairy cows’ behaviors raised on a silvopastoral system through a predictive model. There was a difference (p<0.01) in soil surface temperature (SST) and black globe-humidity index (BGHI) between the shaded and sunny areas of the silvopastoral system. The BGHI was the variable most important to classify the cows’ decision to seek shaded or sunny areas, while the soil surface temperature affected the choice for the area to perform the lying behaviors. In order to understand the influence of these parameters on cows’ lying behavior, we developed another predictive model relating the SST and BGHI with cows lying at shaded and sunny areas. There was significance (p<0.01) for all model parameters. The odds of cows lying increased by approximately 2% with each degree of SST. In contrast, the probability of the cows lying in the shaded areas was 35% less than in sunny areas. The model developed in this study was efficient in identifying changes in the behavior of dairy cows in relation to physical environment. The BGHI influenced the areas used by cows to performing their standing behavior, while the areas used for lying behavior were influenced by the SST.

The environmental conditions of livestock farming exhibit a wide degree of variability. In this context, we developed the ADEF, an autonomous data logger to better understand the degree of environmental variables that farm animals are exposed. Each ADEF consists of a set of components: microcontroller, memory card, real-time clock module, ambient sensor (DHT22), two thermal sensors (DS18B20), and an external battery. To validate the accuracy of ADEF, two stages were performed: (1) evaluation in a controlled environment; and (2) evaluation in the field. In both validation, uncertainty analyses were performed in order to determine if a bias correction would be necessary. In the controlled environment, the ADEF recorded consistent data associated with low measurement uncertainty. The high and significant coefficient of determination (~ 0.9; p < 0.05) between the ADEF and commercial data logger indicated statistical model quality and confirmed the accuracy of the measured data. In the field, a total of 40,100 measurements were used for subsequent analysis. Furthermore, the hourly variation in the ADEF variables showed the same pattern and a high correlation (~ 0.9) with the data from the nearest meteorological station. In the field, environmental variables measured by the ADEF demonstrated low hourly dispersion associated with low relative standard uncertainty. The performance of the ADEF system was satisfactory both controlled environment and field, demonstrating that the ADEF can be easily applied as a low-cost tool that allows a more efficient approach to measure the environmental variables in the field.

Lactobionic acid (LBA) shows singular properties (antioxidant and antimicrobial). However, few studies aim to test them in foods and confirm the actual occurrence of properties. The present study aims to apply LBA/lactic acid in the production of requeijão cremoso model in order to recognize some of the effects caused by the component as a food additive. The effects on the requeijão cremoso model were evaluated by the final properties of the product: water activity, rheological properties, antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity. Model of requeijão completely acidified with LBA showed the maximum antioxidant activity (88%). The results revealed a potential of application of LBA for microbial inhibition. All model produced presented pseudo plastic behaviour.
