ether rats subjected to orofacial formalin injection or intraoral incision surgery display persistent facial heat hyperalgesia, ongoing pain, anxiety-like behavior, and changes in ultrasonic vocalization. Orofacial formalin injection or intraoral incision caused facial heat hyperalgesia for 3 days compared with saline-injected and sham animals. In addition, both experimental groups showed a reduction in the number of entries and in the time spent in the open arms in the elevated plus maze test on day 3, suggesting that anxiety-like behavior developed as a consequence of persistent pain. At this time point, both groups also displayed a reduction in the number of 50-kHz calls, specifically in the flat subtype, which suggests a decrease in social communication. Moreover, on day 3 after surgery, systemic morphine produced robust conditioned place preference in rats subjected to intraoral incision compared with sham, and the former group also presented increased spontaneous facial grooming, revealing the presence of ongoing pain. Finally, Western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis showed a reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the nucleus accumbens, which may reflect a decrease in mesolimbic dopaminergic activity. Altogether, the results demonstrate that acute orofacial pain causes prolonged changes in behavioral and affective pain components, which may be related to dopaminergic changes in the nucleus accumbens....

Author summary Since immemorial times, Mycobacterium leprae inflicts permanent injuries in human kind, within a wide symptomatic spectrum ranging from insensitive skin patches to disabling physical lesions. Innate resistance to this parasite is well recognized, but poorly understood. The complement system is one of the most important arms of the innate response, and several lines of evidence indicate that it may be usurped by the parasite to enhance its entrance into host cells. These include our recent work on genetic association of the disease with lectin pathway components and the complement receptor CR1, whose polymorphisms modulate susceptibility to infection and clinical presentation. Here, we add another pivotal piece in the leprosy parasite-host interaction puzzle: polymorphisms and serum levels of three different lectin pathway proteins, all encoded by the same gene, namely mannan-binding lectin-associated serine protease 1 (MASP1). We found lower levels of two of these proteins, MASP-3 and MAp44, in leprosy patients. Higher MASP-3/lower MASP-1 levels were associated with protective haplotypes, containing two side-by-side polymorphisms located in the exclusive untranslated region of MASP-3 exon 12, which may regulate exon splicing and/or translation efficiency. The associations revealed in this study reflect the pleiotropic nature of this gene. They further illustrate the complexity of the response mounted against the parasite, which places MASP1 products in the regulatory crossroad between the innate and adaptive arms of the immunological system, modulating leprosy susceptibility.

In order to correct oversights and mistakes made by us while transferring species names to Miconia from other genera of the tribe Miconieae, we propose the following new names and combinations: Miconia durandii, Miconia hermogenesii, Miconia macropetala, Miconia reptans, Miconia retropila, Miconia riedeliana, Miconia trichocalyx, and Miconia verruculosa. We also discuss the nomenclatural status of Clidemia deflexa, Melastoma melanophyllum (Clidemia melanophylla) and Staphidiastrum polystachyum (Sagraea polystachya).

Taxonomic, morphological and distributional data on three species of the rare South American corduliid genus Lauromacromia Geijskes, 1970 are updated based on specimens collected recently and old specimens deposited in natural history collections. The female of the poorly known Lauromacromia luismoojeni (Santos, 1967), an endemic species from the Brazilian Cerrado, is illustrated, described and diagnosed...

The aims of this observational study were to (1) define which animal’s phenotypic characteristics determine social position in the context of a commercial organic farm with mixed herd (horned and non-horned cows) and (2) determine the influence of social position on the time at the feeder. We took the following measurements from 27 dairy cows in lactation: body mass, age, body condition score, body length, withers height, distance between horns, horn circumference and length. Replacement and time at the feeder were recorded for 1 h at the time of supplementation. Dominance values for each animal were calculated and the herd was divided into three social categories: dominant (D), intermediate (I) and subordinate (S). Age, body length and body mass influenced (p < 0.001) dominance value of all animals. The presence of horn influenced (p = 0.034) the dominance value of the I and S animals because it was a unique characteristic of these categories. Dominant (84.3%) and intermediate (75.2%) animals spend more time (p < 0.05) at the feeder than the subordinate (59.5%); however, dominant animals tended (p = 0.093) to spend more time at the feeder than the intermediate animals. The social position of an animal was influenced by its age, body mass and body length, and its social position influenced the time at the feeder.

Fiddler crabs are one of the most notable animal groups in Brazilian estuarine environments, due to their high density and characteristic waving of males. An illustrated key to the ten species recorded as far in the country is provided using only clearly visible characters of males. Furthermore, additional recognition characters, information about geographic distribution and biology of each species are presented. Most examined crabs were collected in Guaratuba Bay, southern Brazil.
