A promising use of bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) for different biomedical applications leads to a search for the elucidation of their toxicity mechanisms, since toxicity studies are still at early stage. In the current study, cytotoxic effects of BiNPs produced by laser ablation in solution (LASiS) was investigated in the murine macrophage line RAW 264.7. The cells were exposed to 0.01–50 µg ml−1 of BiNPs for 24 and 48 h and then cytotoxicity assays were performed. Decrease of MTT conversion to formazan and of cell attachment were observed with no effects on cell proliferation. No loss of membrane integrity or significant changes of ROS and RNS levels were observed in exposed cells. Foremost, increased phagocytic activity and DNA repair foci occurred for cells exposed to BiNPs. These effects are important findings that must be considered in the case of biomedical application of BiNPs, since inappropriate macrophages activation and inactivation may lead to immunotoxicity.

The American continent was the last to be occupied by modern humans, and native populations bear the marks of recent expansions, bottlenecks, natural selection, and population substructure. Here we investigate how this demographic history has shaped genetic variation at the strongly selected HLA loci. In order to disentangle the relative contributions of selection and demography process, we assembled a dataset with genome-wide microsatellites and HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DRB1 typing data for a set of 424 Native American individuals. We find that demographic history explains a sizeable fraction of HLA variation, both within and among populations. A striking feature of HLA variation in the Americas is the existence of alleles which are present in the continent but either absent or very rare elsewhere in the world. We show that this feature is consistent with demographic history (i.e., the combination of changes in population size associated with bottlenecks and subsequent population expansions). However, signatures of selection at HLA loci are still visible, with significant evidence selection at deeper timescales for most loci and populations, as well as population differentiation at HLA loci exceeding that seen at neutral markers.

Coolia is a genus of marine benthic dinoflagellates which is widely distributed in tropical and temperate zones. Toxicity has been reported in selected Coolia species, although the identity of causative compounds is still controversial. In this study, we investigated the taxonomical and toxicological aspects of Coolia species from Brazil. Since light- and electron microscopy-based morphology was not enough to distinguish small-celled species, ITS and LSU D1-D3 phylogenetic analyses were used for species definition. Cultures of Coolia palmyrensis and Coolia santacroce were established from samples collected along the northeastern Brazilian coast, the first record of both species in South Atlantic waters. Cultures of Coolia malayensis and Coolia tropicalis were also established and exhibited acute in vivo toxicity to adults of Artemia salina, while C. palmyrensis and C. santacroce were non-toxic. The presence of 30 yessotoxin analogues, 7 metabolites of Coolia and 44 Gambierdiscus metabolites was screened in 14 strains of Coolia. 44-methyl gambierone (formerly referred to as MTX3) and a new isomer of this compound were detected only in C. tropicalis, using both low- and high-resolution LC-MS/MS. To our knowledge, this is the first report of gambierone analogues in dinoflagellates other than Gambierdiscus; the role of C. tropicalis in ciguatera poisoning thus deserves to be considered in further investigations.

The subtropical coastal waters of Brazil have been surveyed regarding their hydroid fauna since 1941. However, a comprehensive compilation of all hydroid records with detailed information has not yet been published for these waters. Besides filling this knowledge gap, we provide an updated species list, along with the biogeographic status (native, introduced, or cryptogenic) of each hydroid species for the area between Ilha Comprida municipality and the state of Rio Grande do Sul. We also present the distribution patterns of hydroid morphotypes, a sampling sufficiency analysis, and spatial-temporal progress of their research. The dataset was compiled by conducting a thorough bibliographical survey, accessing data of zoological collections, and performing field surveys with experimental settlement panels. This work provides an update for new hydroid records for a large number of localities within the study area. We listed 27 families, 59 genera, 129 morphotypes, and 95 unique species. Regarding the unique species, ~ 3% were classified as introduced, ~ 2% as native, and ~ 95% as cryptogenic. The 3% of introduced species include the first record of the non-indigenous Podocoryna loyola on natural substrata and new records of this species for São Paulo. The 95 unique species also represent ~ 19% and ~ 52% of the hydroid fauna recorded in South America and Brazil, respectively. Sampling effort is still not sufficient and therefore continuing research on the hydroid fauna is required, especially for the detection of new introduced species.

ABSTRACT We aimed to verify whether age influences the biochemical profile of healthy lambs during the first four months of life by characterizing the dynamics of its parameters and verifying whether there are differences between the profiles of growing animals and the reference values established for adults. Blood samples of 34 ½ White Dorper × ½ Suffolk female lambs were collected at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days of age, and the serum concentrations of total proteins, total globulins, albumin, [...]
