Anthropogenic climate change is expected to strengthen upwelling events worldwide, driven by an increase of upwelling-favorable winds. However, Earth System Models (ESM) tend to underestimate regional processes due to their coarse grid resolution, which can lead to local biases. We use a high-resolution ocean model ( $${1/12}^{\circ }$$ ) forced by results from the Max-Planck-Institute-ESM to analyze the impact of the RCP8.5 emission scenario on the upwelling of South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) in the South Brazil Bight (SBB). We find a stronger Ekman forcing and a higher spread of SACW over the shelf, but this does not translate into higher vertical velocities at the bottom of the mixed-layer in the end of the century. The increased winds’ effect is essentially balanced by an increase in water column stability due to the surface warming. This is particularly important during austral summer, when this process tends to weaken the upwelling. Vertical velocities decrease significantly along the shelf break. Here, the upwelling regime is governed by the Brazil Current (BC) and slight changes in transport induce large responses in upwelling strength. The consequences are increased sea surface temperatures over most of the shelf, although mitigated by the SACW upwelling and kept below global projections. However, temperatures decrease along Cabo Frio. In this region, shelf break upwelling dominates and is enhanced by a local increase in the BC transport. This highlights the importance of regional processes and, more specifically, of changes in the BC transport for the upwelling in the SBB.

This paper explores and combines implicit stochastic optimization (ISO) with copula functions to simulate long-term operating policies for a hydropower reservoir located in the Northeastern region of Brazil. Overall, ISO is considered as one of the most reliable techniques to derive long-term reservoir operating rules for reservoirs. This method employs a deterministic optimization model to estimate the optimal reservoir allocations under different inflow scenarios and later constructs operating rules for each month by relating the ensemble of the optimal releases, the initial storage volume and future inflow values. Those rules are generally established by fitting approaches including linear regression or nonlinear methods. This work illustrates the applicability to combine copulas with ISO to define reservoir operation policies based on a probabilistic procedure. Firstly, synthetic streamflow scenarios are simulated using a periodic vine copula model. Afterward, optimal release data are estimated by ISO for a set of inflow scenarios. Joint probability distribution functions based on copulas are constructed in order to forecast the expected release, conditioned to the initial reservoir volume and future inflows data. Results indicate that the proposed model represents a flexible approach to construct operating rules and derive long-term reservoir operating policies with low variability, allowing to reproduce different dependence structures of simulated data.

In this study, the etherification of glycerol was executed with dodecanol through use of homogeneous catalysts. First, a univariate study of direct condensation was executed to determine the effects of the variables reaction time, catalyst type and glycerol:dodecanol molar ratio on the dodecyl ether (DOE) and glyceryl monododecyl ether (GMDE) production. A full 23 factorial design was used to evaluate the effect of glycerol:dodecanol molar ratio, catalyst loading and temperature on the production of dodecyl ether (DOE), glyceryl monododecyl ether (GMDE) substituted on carbon 1 (C1) or carbon 2 (C2). The GMDE yield was 35% in 3 h. The experimental results indicated that rising temperature positively affected GMDE content and higher catalyst loading increased DOE production. In the case of traditional routes, Williamson synthesis produced just 5% GMDE while when applying solketal synthesis, high yield and purity of this compound were obtained, demonstrating the viability of GMDE production.

Environmental zoning proposal for the Araucária Biological Reserve based on topographic attributes   A B S T R A C T The consumption of natural resources has raised questions about what can be done to avoid increasing damage to nature. Thus, Conservation Units (PAs) play a major role in the process of environmental protection. Add to this the management plan, an instrument that establishes the zoning of the CU and the norms that should govern the use of the area. In this context, this work aimed to propose the environmental zoning of REBIO das Araucárias from the processing of topographic attributes and their correlations with land use. For this, several topographic attributes derived from the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) were generated. As results, it was verified that the use of the topographic attributes made possible the understanding of the pedological information and of limitation of use (environmental susceptibility). Therefore, for the zoning, a cross-tabulation was performed between the Use Limitation and the Land Use, and the Management Areas of the unit were delineated. Methodological proposal for elaboration of geospatial database as a subsidy for environmental researches: application in conservation units in the north coast of Paraná   A B S T R A C T Geospatial Databases (BDG) features great importance at the elaboration of environmental studies, primarily at diagnostics that subsidize management plans, urban master plans and more.  Still, studies that address the procedures of building a BDG are incipient. Through a technical co-operation between department of Geography from Federal University of Paraná and Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, since 2014 a BDG building methodology based on experiences in environmental diagnosis at the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Guaraqueçaba and other Conservation Units (UCs) from the north coast of Paraná. Thus, the present work aims to propose a methodology of BDG creation, which is divided in 4 steps: evaluation, organization, quality and application. Between the main results there are: 282 geospatial data in 51 thematic categories, the APA of Guaraqueçaba’s limits revised, and 52 cartographic products that will be featured in the environmental diagnosis. This proposal stands out by bringing data storage and naming recommendations, rules for quality control (thematic consistency, topology and metadata), and also its publication on free online platforms. Yet, there are some recommendations for the application of this data in territory management, such as protocols for BDG feeding.
