Lnc-uc.147, a long non-coding RNA derived from a transcribed ultraconserved region (T-UCR), was previously evidenced in breast cancer. However, the role of this region in other tumor types was not previously investigated. The present study aimed to investigate lnc-uc.147 in different types of cancer, as well as to suggest lnc-uc.147 functional and regulation aspects. From solid tumor datasets analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), deregulated lnc-uc.147 expression was associated with the histologic grade of hepatocellular carcinoma, and with the tumor stage of clear cell renal and gastric adenocarcinoma. Considering the epidemiologic relevance of liver cancer, silencing lnc-uc.147 reduced the viability and clonogenic capacity of HepG2 cell lines. Additionally, we suggest a relation between the transcription factor TEAD4 and lnc-uc.147 in liver and breast cancer cells.

Microalgae are a natural source of valuable compounds with a wide range of applications. Given their physiological plasticity, strategies aiming at increasing the content of biomolecules have been proposed. In this study, low-dose copper and blue/red lights were combined and used as a manipulative strategy to induce biomolecule accumulation in Kirchneriella contorta. Cultures were exposed to a 1.6 × 10–9 to 1.7 × 10–8 mol L−1 free copper (Cu2+) concentration range under white light for 48 h. Afterwards, the white light was replaced with blue or red lights for up to 96 h. We evaluated population growth through growth rates, photosynthesis through pulse amplitude modulated fluorescence (PAM) and biomolecules by quantifying chlorophyll a, carotenoids, carbohydrates and proteins. The results showed that at 3.8 × 10–9 mol L−1 Cu2+ and blue light, 2 × more carotenoids, 4 × more carbohydrates and 3 × more proteins were accumulated in the cells compared to the control. Among the light colors, the blue light most significantly interfered with the algal metabolism compared to the other colors. Although growth rates and maximum and operational quantum yields were not affected, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) increased under blue light, showing that its higher energy compared to red and white lights may have impacted the photosynthetic apparatus. This study contributes to the biotechnology of microalgae by proposing a manipulative strategy that triggered the build-up of biomolecules in K. contorta.

Metastasis is a multi-step process that leads to the dissemination of tumor cells to new sites and, consequently, to multi-organ neoplasia. Although most lethal breast cancer cases are related to metastasis occurrence, little is known about the dysregulation of each step, and clinicians still lack reliable therapeutic targets for metastasis impairment. To fill these gaps, we constructed and analyzed gene regulatory networks for each metastasis step (cell adhesion loss, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and angiogenesis). Through topological analysis, we identified E2F1, EGR1, EZH2, JUN, TP63, and miR-200c-3p as general hub-regulators, FLI1 for cell-adhesion loss specifically, and TRIM28, TCF3, and miR-429 for angiogenesis. Applying the FANMOD algorithm, we identified 60 coherent feed-forward loops regulating metastasis-related genes associated with distant metastasis-free survival prediction. miR-139-5p, miR-200c-3p, miR-454-3p, and miR-1301-3p, among others, were the FFL’s mediators. The expression of the regulators and mediators was observed to impact overall survival and to go along with metastasis occurrence. Lastly, we selected 12 key regulators and observed that they are potential therapeutic targets for canonical and candidate antineoplastics and immunomodulatory drugs, like trastuzumab, goserelin, and calcitriol. Our results highlight the relevance of miRNAs in mediating feed-forward loops and regulating the expression of metastasis-related genes. Altogether, our results contribute to understanding the multi-step metastasis complexity and identifying novel therapeutic targets and drugs for breast cancer management.

A species is newly recorded from Paraguay, Sylvicanthon monnei Cupello and Vaz-de-Mello, 2018, and the previously dubious record of Sylvicanthon candezei (Harold, 1869) from the country is confirmed. Agamopus viridis Boucomont, 1928, Pseudocanthon chaquensis Nazaré-Silva and Silva, 2021, and Pseudocanthon pantanensis Nazaré-Silva and Silva, 2021 are newly recorded from Paraguay, and Pseudocanthon xanthurus (Blanchard, 1846), already known from humid southern areas of the country, is newly recorded from its northern Dry Chaco. The publication date of P. xanthurus—1846, not 1843, 1845, or 1847 as previously mentioned—is clarified, and additional data on the chromatic population structure of Bolbites onitoides Harold, 1868 in Paraguay are presented.

(en) The genus Phaonantho Albuquerque (Anthomyiidae) comprises three species: P. mallochi (Curran), P. benevola Couri, and P. sordilloae Pamplona & Couri. These species are distributed in the neotropics. In this study, we updated the distributional knowledge for Phaonantho species, including the first record of the genus in Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, and Mexico, and additional new records to Brazil.
