In the neotropics, vegetation formations at high elevations are often unique, with their own characteristic vegetation because of unique and complex evolutionary histories. The complexity of the biogeographic and ecological structure of the fauna is demonstrated by the specialized fauna and flora occurring in these regions. Fanniidae (Diptera) is one of these specialized groups that became very diversified in the highlands. Currently, of the 91 species of Fanniidae in the Neotropical region, 43 (8 Euryomma, 35 Fannia) occur exclusively in Andean and Central American highlands. Here, we increase that highland diversity by describing 14 new species from 1000–4150 m.a.s.l. in the Andes and Central America: Fannia awa sp. nov., F. bari sp. nov., F. boruca sp. nov., F. bribri sp. nov., F. huetare sp. nov., F. humahuaca sp. nov., F. kabekwa sp. nov., F. palta sp. nov., F. polleti sp. nov., F. quillacingas sp. nov., F. teribi sp. nov., F. terraba sp. nov., F. tsachilas sp. nov. and F. yukpa sp. nov. We also provide an identification key for male specimens and diagnoses and descriptions of the species, along with photographs and illustrations of the male terminalia. New records and updated distributions are also provided for the Andean species.

Space and environment are fundamental in influencing the community structure. However, their relative influences vary according to species’ biological characteristics. Here we test whether differences in life-history traits mainly linked to dispersal abilities influence bat, rodent and marsupial beta diversity along spatial and environmental gradients. We expect bat beta diversity to be weakly related with space in comparison to dispersal-limited rodents and marsupials. Using data from communities distributed along the Atlantic Forest of South America, we calculated the total beta diversity and its turnover and nestedness components for each group. We estimated the strength of correlation of beta diversity and its components along spatial and environmental gradients, comparing their importance within and between groups. Space had the higher influence on rodent and marsupial beta diversity. For bats, both gradients influenced similarly their community composition. Between taxa, the influence of these gradients did not differ for rodents and marsupials, while bats presented a stronger relationship with environment compared to non-volant small mammals. Also, all groups presented a similar influence of the spatial gradients on their community structure, despite their differences in dispersal abilities. Our results suggest that differences in biological characteristics partially influence the community structure of these mammals, with their responses along space likely reflecting similar biogeographical dynamics affecting their distribution. Overall, our results improve the understanding of the processes structuring these communities, highlighting the benefits of comparative analyses within a beta diversity perspective to better understand the influence of multiple processes on the community assembly along geographical gradients.

Author summary The heterogeneity of clinical progression during chronic Trypanosoma cruzi infection and the mechanisms determining why some individuals develop symptoms whereas others remain asymptomatic are still poorly understood. The pathogenesis of chronic Chagas Disease (CD) has been attributed mainly to the persistence of the causing parasite and the character of individual host immune responses. Collectin-11 is a host immune response molecule with affinity for sugars found on the T. cruzi’s surface. Together with mannose-binding lectin-associated serine proteases (MASPs), it triggers the host defense response against pathogens. Genetic variants and protein levels of MASP-2 and the mannose-binding lectin (MBL), a molecule structurally similar to collectin-11, have been found to be associated with susceptibility to T. cruzi infection and clinical progression to cardiomyopathy. This prompted us to investigate collectin-11 genetic variants and protein levels in 251 patients with chronic CD and 108 healthy individuals, and to examine the effect of gene interaction between COLEC11 and MASP2 risk mutations. We found an association to CD infection with COLEC11 gene variants and reduced collectin-11 levels. The concomitant presence of these genetic variants and MASP2 risk mutations greatly increased the odds for cardiomyopathy. This is the first study to reveal a role for collectin-11 and COLEC11-MASP2 gene interaction in the pathogenesis of CD.
