The aim was to compare the outcomes acquired from the OSA-Vet® device with conventional quantitative and qualitative tear tests and between groups within each test, in brachycephalic dogs both healthy and those diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The dogs were divided into four groups: healthy dogs (HD), with mild KCS (MIKCS); moderate KCS (MOKCS); severe KCS (SKCS). All patients underwent ocular surface diagnostic examination in the following order, with a 10-minute interval between tests: non-invasive tear film breakup time (TBUTNI - OSA-Vet®), tear meniscus height (TMH-OSA-Vet®), meniscometry (I-Tear® test), Schirmer Tear Test-1 (STT-1), and tear film breakup time (TBUT). Kruskal-Wallis H tests were performed to establish the difference between the groups and Spearman´s correlation coefficient test to assess the correlation between tests. And an analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey-Kramer post-hoc test was performed for TMH. Results with (p <.05) were considered statistically significant. The correlation of conventional tests in relation to those obtained by OSA-Vet® proved to be low, except between TBUTNI (OSA-Vet®) and TBUT in MOKCS, with a strong correlation (r =.925). In the comparison between TBUTNI (OSA-Vet®) and TBUT in MIKCS the correlation was moderate (r =.547) as well as STT-1 and I-Tear® test in MOKCS (r =.416). In the comparison between groups, the main result observed was a significant difference between all the KCS groups and HD, in the TBUT and TBUTNI (OSA-Vet®) test. The OSA-Vet® and conventional tests are useful for evaluating the ocular surface of brachycephalic dogs. However, the OSA-Vet® does not correlate well with conventional standardized tests.

Accurate and simplified estimates of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) are needed to improve the rational use of water in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Here we proposed, tested, and evaluated a methodology to estimate the spatialized reference evapotranspiration (ETo), based on the association between satellite images and climatic data measured in the meteorological stations. Landsat 8 and Aqua MODIS satellite images covering the Tibagi River basin (TRB), Southern Brazil, were used to estimate the surface temperature (Ts) and total precipitable water (Wp), respectively. Ts and Wp were associated with the average values of air temperature (TmEM) and relative humidity (RHmEM), in simple and multiple linear regressions. The calibration was performed by estimating the average temperature (TeSR) and relative humidity (RHeSR) of the air by remote sensing. The ETo estimated with alternative models and satellite imagery data (TeSR and RHeSR) was compared with the standard ETo calculated with the ASCE Penman-Monteith method. The multiple linear model presented a significant good performance to estimate TeSR(Wp;Ts) (r = 0.87) and RHeSR(Wp;Ts) (r = 0.41). EToMJS(Ra;ψair) (r = 0.67) and EToC (r = 0.63), estimated with the Moretti-Jerszurki-Silva and Camargo models, respectively, achieved better performance in estimating ETo when using satellite imagery.

Fire danger indices are essential in identifying fire warning situations in vegetation, facilitating more efficient and economical prevention and combat efforts planning. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Monte Alegre Formula fire danger index (FMA) in 17 municipalities in the Curitiba microregion located in Paraná, Brazil. Data on the occurrence of fires in vegetation from the Paraná Military Fire Department were collected, as well as daily records of relative humidity and rainfall from 2011 to 2016. An analysis was carried out of the daily values of the degree of fire danger, the number of days with fire, and the number of occurrences according to the FMA during the period analyzed. Furthermore, efficiency was evaluated using a contingency table to calculate the Skill Score (SS) and Success Percentage (PS). The results indicated an accuracy rate of 65.8% for fire occurrences and 80.2% for non-occurrences. The SS (0.42) and PS (70.9) values exceeded those of ten other comparative studies. Although the FMA performed satisfactorily for the study area, adjustments to the hazard level ranges are necessary to increase its effectiveness.
