Salvia lachnostachys is an herbaceous plant with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cytotoxic properties. This study investigated the antitumor effect of an ethanolic extract of Salvia lachnostachys leaves (EES) in a solid Ehrlich carcinoma model. Ehrlich cells were inoculated subcutaneously in the right pelvic member (2 × 106 cells) in female Swiss mice. The animals were treated with vehicle (10 mL kg−1, p.o.), EES (30 and 100 mg kg−1, p.o.), or methotrexate (2.5 mg kg−1, i.p.) for 21 days (early treatment) or 14 days (late treatment) after tumor inoculation, or 10 days before tumor inoculation and continued for 21 days after tumor inoculation (chemopreventive treatment). The acute toxicity test was performed according OECD guidelines Late treatment with EES had no antitumor effect. Early treatment with 100 mg kg−1 EES prevented tumor development, increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels and decreased tumor superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels and Cyclin D1 expression, and tumor cell necrosis was observed. Chemopreventive treatment with EES for 10 and 31 days prevented tumor development in the same manner. EES treatment for 31 days decreased hepatic and tumor SOD activity, tumor IL-10 levels and Cyclin D1 expression, and increased tumor reduced glutathione, N-acetylglucosaminidase, reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, TNF-α levels and Nrf2 expression. No toxicity was observed in the acute toxicity assay. In conclusion, EES had an antitumor effect by inhibiting Cyclin D1 expression and increasing inflammation with early and chemopreventive treatment. Modulation of the antioxidant system also contribute for the antitumor effects of EES.

(en) Since abiotic and biotic factors can compromise the survival of bacteria and their viability, encapsulation of cells in biodegradable gel matrices, a biological macromolecule, is one alternative to have their shelf life extended. Here, it was developed a gel-based formulation of the bioinoculant Azospirillum brasilense strain AbV5 and determined the effect of trehalose and humic acid supplementation in viability and survival of bacteria. For each 2 ml of sodium alginate solution (3%), 1 ml of the inoculum was extruded in a solution containing sodium alginate complexed with calcium chloride, forming calcium alginate beads. Supplements were used in a ratio of 2:2:1. Treatments were peat; alginate; alginate + humic acid; alginate + trehalose 0.1 M; alginate + trehalose 1 M. Morphometric aspects, survival rate and viability were determined in 9 storage periods (3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 30, 45, 60, 90 days). As results, beads were able to sustain the growth of A. brasilense for 90 days. Shelf life quality decreased in all treatments and peat remained the best carrier. Encapsulation, despite promoting the greatest losses in the survival of bacteria in the first days, ensured better cell viability. Trehalose in low concentrations (0.1M) improved cell viability during storage, optimizing plant inoculation.

(en) Macrobrachium amazonicum is the native freshwater prawn species with the greatest potential for captive production in Brazil. The stable isotope carbon and nitrogen technique (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) is efficient to determine the contribution of different food sources to a given organism. We used this technique to estimate the contribution of the food sources in the biomass gain of M. amazonicum . Fish fillets were used to determine the isotopic fractionation between juveniles of M. amazonicum and a standard food source. Juvenile M. amazonicum were submitted to four treatments with different food availability to determine their contributions; T1: without soil substrate and with feed supply; T2: without soil substrate and feed supply; T3: with soil substrate, feed supply and addition of an aquatic macrophyte ( Elodea sp.); and, T4: with soil substrate, aquatic macrophytes and without feed supply. Periphyton, plankton and precipitated organic material were present in all treatments. The isotopic fractionation was 0.57 ± 0.07 (carbon) and 2.14 ± 0.18 (nitrogen). The prawn fed with ration presented growth 2.4 and 2.82 times higher in the treatments without substrate (T1) and with substrate and macrophytes (T3), respectively. The contribution of the food sources reinforces omnivore in prawn. The benthic organisms and feed supply were fundamental for the better growth performance of M. amazonicum . Estimating the effective contributions of food sources can help in developing diets more adequate for the species, increasing productivity, reducing costs and reducing the environmental impact of waste substances.
