In this work we have applied for the first time the distorted-wave approximation (DWA) combined with Schwinger Variational Iterative Method (SVIM) to describe electronic excitation of H2 molecules by positron collisions. The integral (ICS) and differential (DCS) excitation cross sections for X1Σg+ → B1Σu+ transition of H2 molecule, in the range from near threshold up to 45 eV of positron energies, were reported in static (ST) and static-correlation-polarization (STPOL) levels. Our two-state ICS in DWA-ST level have quantitative agreement with experimental measurement at energies from threshold up to 18 eV and the inclusion of polarization effects increases the cross sections. Comparison with 2-state close-coupling approximation (CCA), 2-state Schwinger Multichannel (SMC), 5-state SMC and 1013-state from Convergent Close-Coupling (CCC) methods are done and is encouraging. The relative steeper drop above 22 eV in experimental ICS was not observed by any theoretical calculations indicating that new measurements would be interesting for this transition in this energy range.

There have been few studies on the pharmacological properties of <i>Rhamnus sphaerosperma</i> var. <i>pubescens</i>, a native Brazilian species popularly known as &#x201C;fruto-de-pombo.&#x201D; The aim of this study was to investigate the scavenging capacity of emodin, physcion, and the ethanolic crude extract of <i>Rhamnus sphaerosperma</i> var. <i>pubescens</i> against reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, as well as their role and plausible mechanisms in prompting cell death and changes in AKT phosphorylation after cervical (SiHa and C33A) and oral (HSC-3) squamous cell carcinoma treatments. Emodin was shown to be the best scavenger of NO&#x2022; and O2&#x2022;&#x2212;, while all samples were equally effective in HOCl/OCl&#x2212; capture. Emodin, physcion, and the ethanolic extract all exhibited cytotoxic effects on SiHa, C33A, HSC-3, and HaCaT (immortalized human keratinocytes, nontumorigenic cell line), involving mixed cell death (apoptosis and necrosis) independent of the caspase activation pathway. Emodin, physcion, and the ethanolic extract increased intracellular oxidative stress and DNA damage. Emodin decreased the activation of AKT in all tumor cells, physcion in HSC-3 and HaCaT cells, and the ethanolic extract in C33A and HaCaT cells, respectively. The induction of cancer cell death by emodin, physcion, and the ethanolic crude extract of <i>Rhamnus sphaerosperma</i> var. <i>pubescens</i> was related to an increase in intracellular oxidative stress and DNA damage and a decrease in AKT activation. These molecules are therefore emerging as interesting candidates for further study as novel options to treat cervical and oral carcinomas.

The capacities of fatty esters and commercial biodiesel (i.e., mixture of fatty esters with fossil diesel) for solubilizing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated and were attributed to the property of fatty esters forming aggregates and internally accommodating such compounds. Different systems formed by solely fatty esters and commercial biodiesel were investigated to study the effect of the structure of fatty esters on the solubility of PAHs. In the presence of ethyl oleate, the solubility of naphthalene increased by 23 ± 1.3%, that of phenanthrene by 1.4 ± 0.7%, and those of anthracene and pyrene by 1.1 ± 0.6%. The maximum solubility values of PAHs indicated that fatty esters exerted a positive effect on solubility in the same way as a surfactant (ionic and neutral). In the presence of a mixture of fatty esters, the maximum concentration of naphthalene solubilized was 105.5 ± 2.5&nbsp;mg/L, a 3.7-fold increase compared to its solubility in water. The same behavior was observed for other compounds like pyrene and phenanthrene. However, they were dissolved in different proportions due to the different physico-chemical properties and chemical structure of each compound. Considering the presence of PAHs in fossil diesel, the potential of fatty esters was assessed when mixed with fossil diesel, commercial available as biodiesel, which showed increase in the solubility of PAHs in the aqueous phase. In the absence of fatty esters, when only fossil diesel was present, the maximum concentrations of naphthalene and phenanthrene were 136.3 ± 3.9 and 1.28 ± 0.07&nbsp;μg/L, respectively, while the maximum values in the presence of a blend of fossil diesel and biodiesel were 437.6 ± 16.7 and 26.8 ± 4.5&nbsp;μg/L for naphthalene and phenanthrene, respectively. Therefore, it was reasonable to affirm that fatty esters interfered in the solubilities of PAHs, which might be associated with the formation of aggregates.
