This study aimed to evaluate the effect of autolyzed yeast (obtained from culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in sugarcane derivatives) supplementation on diet digestibility, feeding behavior, levels of blood metabolites associated with protein and energy metabolism, and performance of Dorper × Santa Ines lambs finished in feedlot. Twenty-four non-castrated male lambs with an average age of 4 months and a body weight (BW) of 19.49 ± 3.08 kg were allocated to individual pens within a covered and elevated shed. The pens had a slatted floor without bedding suspended 1.8 m above the ground, and an area of 1.5 m2. The trial was set out in a completely randomized design with two treatments and twelve replicates each. The treatments consisted of a basal diet without yeast products (Control) or with yeast culture (Yeast, RumenYeast® at 5 g/animal/day). Lambs were fed ad libitum with a total mixed ration (TMR) composed of 400 g/kg of dry matter (DM) of Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp.) and 600 g/kg DM of concentrate feed, and contained 146 g/kg DM of crude protein and 2.30 Mcal/kg DM of metabolizable energy. The experiment was conducted over 84 days, with the first 14 days serving as an adaptation period. The subsequent experimental period was divided into two phases to evaluate animal performance (Days 1–63) and DM digestibility (Days 64–70). The supplementation with autolyzed yeast did not affect rumen or fecal pH, the DM digestibility, as well as the feeding behavior of lambs (the time spent on feeding, rumination, water intake, and idleness activities). In addition, yeast supplementation did not alter the serum levels of albumin, creatinine, urea, or level of plasma glucose, resulting in similar animal performance compared to the Control group. The mean values for final BW, DM intake, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio were 37.52 kg, 1.051 kg/day, 0.286 kg/day, and 3.74 kg DM/kg gain, respectively. In the conditions of this study, the supplementation of autolyzed yeast in TMR (5 g/animal/day) does not affect diet digestibility, feeding behavior, blood metabolites, or performance of lambs finished in feedlot. Regarding that metabolic and performance lamb responses were not improved, the supplementation of autolyzed yeast at the tested dose is not recommended. However, it is important to note that markers related to immunity and inflammation were not evaluated in our work, and these should be considered in future studies.

The Mixed Ombrophyllous Forest (MOF), inserted in the Atlantic Forest biome, is of great ecological value, with deficient management strategies. In this context, sustainable management helps to promote the regeneration and growth of individual trees and control others, while maintaining the natural forest structure. This study therefore aimed to discuss opportunities and limitations of biochar, produced from two species from the MOF, which are currently only utilized to a limited extent in the study area in southern Brazil. A slow pyrolysis process at a lab scale was designed, biochar was produced, and key properties were analyzed from Hovenia dulcis Thunb. (chosen as an invasive species) and Mimosa scabrella Benth. (chosen as a native, fast-growing species), including branches and stems. The results showed that branches of Mimosa scabrella (BMS) had the highest biochar yield (30.32 ± 0.3%) and the highest electrical conductivity (415.08 ± 24.75 mS cm−1). Stems of Mimosa scabrella (SMS) showed the highest higher heating value (HHV—31.76 ± 0.01 MJ kg−1), lower heating value (LHV—31.03 ± 0.01 MJ kg−1), and energy yield (49.1%), while the branches of Hovenia dulcis (BHD) showed the lowest values. For the elemental analysis, SMS showed the best results, with the highest amount of fixed carbon (78.62 ± 0.22%) and carbon content (85.87 ± 0.083%), and consequently the lowest amount of ash (3.52 ± 0.08%). BHD showed a better water-holding capacity (303.26 ± 15.21%) and higher pH value (7.65 ± 0.14). The investigations conducted on the biochar from both species indicate a strong suitability of these woods for producing high-quality biochar.

(en) Urolithiasis is a multifactorial pathological condition commonly reported in pigs worldwide, characterized by the presence of uroliths within the urinary tract. One of its major consequences is partial or complete urinary obstruction, which may lead to death if not promptly managed through surgical intervention or urolith dissolution. Compared to other domestic species, studies addressing the therapeutic management of urolithiasis in pigs remain limited. This report describes a case of vesical urolithiasis in a male Moura pig treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Paraná (HV-UFPR), presenting with stranguria, pollakiuria, and intermittent hematuria. Following diagnosis based on laboratory and imaging findings, surgical management via cystotomy was performed to remove the uroliths. The clinical and surgical approach adopted proved to be safe and effective for the treatment of urolithiasis, contributing to the restoration of urinary function and improved quality of life for the patient.

We quantified the acute toxicity of water-soluble fractions (WSFs) from crude oil, gasoline, diesel, lubricant oil, and two insulating mineral oils (IMOa, IMOb) to the Neotropical fish Astyanax altiparanae. Six independent static-renewal assays (110 fish each; 11 nominal WSF dilutions [0–100% v/v]) were performed. The calculated LC50-96 h and LC10-96 h were gasoline = 2.65 and 0.5%; diesel = 16.22 and 2.75%; IMOa = 17.01 and 5.35%; petroleum = 23.59 and 1.76%; lubricant = 27.65 and 11.24%; and IMOb = 53.58 and 7.84%. Gasoline was the most toxic, reflecting its high BTEX and low-molecular-weight PAH content, whereas lubricant oil and IMOb were least toxic, consistent with their dominance of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons. The unexpectedly high toxicity of IMOa, comparable to diesel, is likely attributable to proprietary antioxidant additives. These baseline LC50/LC10 data fill a gap for tropical freshwater species and provide reference points for subsequent sub-chronic testing and regional environmental-risk assessments. By establishing a clear toxicity hierarchy for common hydrocarbon contaminants and highlighting the overlooked role of additives, this work is crucial for developing scientific-grounded water quality guidelines tailored to protect the unique and often understudied biodiversity of neotropical freshwater ecosystems.
